- On Android, Active Friends will have a Green Dot next to their profile picture
You can still send messages to people who aren’t online at the time.
You can also search for a specific person by typing their name in the search bar at the top of the screen.
Your Computer:
1. Open your favorite web browser and go to Facebook.com. If you are not already logged in to your profile, you will need to enter your Username and Password and click Log in
2. You need to click on the Chat button that is in the bottom right corner of the page
- The number in parenthesis next to Chat is the number of Active Friends
- This will open a pop-up window with a list of those people
3. Next, type in the name of the friend you want to message into the Search field
- A list of results will show up; if the person has a Green Dot next to their name, they are online and able to see your message immediately
- Just so you are aware, your friends can change their Chat Settings to show that they are Offline even if they aren’t.
2. Ask Them
Another way to tell if someone is active on Messenger or the Facebook app is to ask them. You can simply just send them a message asking, are using the messenger app to talk or are you just using Facebook. If they’re just using Facebook, then you’ll know that they’re not on the Messenger app despite the green dot showing up in Messenger as well.
Of course, you’ll never be able to know if they’re telling the truth for sure but no one is going to go out of their way to lie about if they’re using Messenger or Facebook. Most people would be transparent about it.
How to Tell If Someone is Using on Facebook
To check if they’re using Facebook and not Messenger, you can check for their activity on Facebook. To check if someone is actively using Facebook, if you have mutual friends, look through what your mutual friends have posted and see if they like and click on it. You can also go to their profile and check if they’ve updated their status or recently been tagged in a post. If you see that they’ve done something recently, you will know they’re using Facebook Messenger.
