But, because TikTok does not have third-party ads, you may then wonder what it’s about. Read on to find out all the possible reasons why an X may appear at the top left corner of your TikTok screen.

Why Is There An X On the Top Left Of My Screen

1. The Close Button Has Pre-Loaded Before A Pop-up

It is true that TikTok does not support third-party ads, but TikTok does bring up its own ads from time to time where it can suggest things like buying someone gift credits. Normally, the ad should load first, and then the close button comes a few seconds after so that you can close it if you are not interested in making the purchase.

But there are times when the close (X) button may load before the ad, making you wonder what it may be about.

Fix – Close the X By Clicking On It

When this happens, you do not need to fret. All you need to do is simply click on the X to remove it and also close the ad.

2. There’s A Bug

If the X at the top left of the screen will not go away after you click on it, or if it keeps coming back shortly after you close it, then it is possible that there is a bug affecting your TikTok app. A bug is an error in the software of an app that causes it to stop working properly.

In that case, you would need to try the fixes provided below to resolve the problem.

Fix – Log Out Then Back In

The first thing you need to try is to log out and then log back into your TikTok account. The reason why this is important is that the X may have been caused by what is called a Token Corruption.

You see, when you first logged into your TikTok account, you created something called a Login Session. As soon as your login is successful, TikTok servers assign you a Token that will serve throughout the duration of that login session. This token is like a key or permission that allows you to use the TikTok services associated with your account.

Now, there are times where TikTok servers may have a bug that causes your token to become corrupt, and you start experiencing issues like seeing the X at the top left corner of your screen or being unable to complete certain tasks on TikTok.

When this happens, what you would need to do is to log out of your TikTok account and then log back in. What this does is to assign you a new, working token that will allow you to continue using TikTok normally and stop experiencing unusual things like the X at the top left of your TikTok screen.

To log out and log back in on TikTok:

1. Click on the Profile tab at the bottom right corner of your TikTok screen

2. Next, click on the Menu button at the top right of the screen. This should be 3 horizontal lines

3. From the options that pop up, select Settings and Privacy

4. When the Settings and Privacy page loads, scroll to the end of the page and click on Log Out

5. When prompted, confirm the log out action

6. When you are logged out, you will be returned to the TikTok Home page where you can watch videos again

7. You need to click on the Profile tab again, and when the profile page opens, you will see your account at the top of the screen with your last login time displayed

8. Just tap on your account name, confirm login, and you will be logged back into your TikTok account

9. If you do not see your name on this screen, tap on login instead and log into your TikTok account

10. The X at the top left of the screen should then be cleared

Fix 2 – Update TikTok to Get Rid Of Bugs

The next debugging fix to try is to update your TikTok app. We explained that seeing an X at the top left of the screen is usually only associated with an ad for gift purchase. If you see it under any other condition, it is possible that the TikTok app on your phone has developed an error in its software code.

It is normal for applications to develop such software code errors occasionally. The app developers are aware of this. That’s one of the reasons why they release updates from time to time to get rid of those bugs. So, the solution to the issues of the X at the top of your TikTok screen may just be one update away.

To update your TikTok app:

1. Exit TikTok and swipe it away from recent items

2. Then, open your App Store or Play Store

3. Search for TikTok in the search bar and select it from the results

4. If there is an update available, you will see Update by the side.

5. Tap on update to begin installing the TikTok update

6. When it is complete, you should then see Open instead of Update.

7. Tap on Open to relaunch TikTok and see if the issue of X at the top left of the screen is fixed.

Fix 3 – Clear Your Cache to Get Rid of TikTok Bugs

If there were no updates available, the next thing to consider is that the cache on the TikTok app may be corrupt. A cache is temporary memory for every application on your phone. This memory holds information about each application, such as your login details, your preferences, some settings, and previously-loaded images.

Whenever you launch an app such as TikTok, it must load data from this cache memory so that the app loads faster, you are able to access parts of the app quicker, and you do not need to repeat actions like logging in every time you load the app.

So, it’s easy to see how an issue with this cache memory can cause your TikTok to stop functioning properly and have issues like the unusual X at the top left of the screen. To fix this, you need to clear the cache and reload TikTok.

First, you need to clear the cache on the TikTok app directly. To do this:

1. Open TikTok

2. Tap the Profile tab at the bottom right of the screen

3. Tap the three-line menu icon at the top right

4. Select Settings and Privacy from the option

5. Under Cache and Cellular Data, select Free Up Space

6. Beside Cache, select Clear and confirm the action

However, this will not perform a complete clearing of the cache. This is why, on the page to clear cache, TikTok will tell you that the action will not affect your TikTok experience. To complete the cache clearing, you also need to clear the TikTok app cache from your phone settings. To do this:

First, exit TikTok and swipe it away from recent items. Then,

On Android

1. Long-press the TikTok app

2. Select App Info

3. Select Clear Data

4. Select Clear Cache

On iOS

1. Navigate to Settings on your device

2. Select General

3. Select iPhone Storage

4. Select TikTok

5. Select Offload app

6. Confirm the action

7. Select Reinstall app

Fix 4 – Use TikTok on Your Phone’s Browser

If the issue persists, we recommend that you try a temporary workaround like using TikTok on your phone’s browser. The issue of X at the top left of the screen on TikTok is usually associated with the mobile application. So, using a mobile browser is a way to work around this, even though the experience is not as good as using the app.

To do this:

1. Open a browser on your phone like Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Brave

2. Type tiktok.com into the address bar and click Go

3. When TikTok opens, you are likely to be prompted to Log In. Tap on that

4. If not, click on the profile tab at the bottom right of the screen, just like on the mobile app

5. Then, click on Sign Up

6. On the Sign Up page, look to the bottom. You will see Already Have An Account? Log In

7. Click on Log In and then log into TikTok on your mobile browser

On the mobile browser, you can also easily swipe up to see the next video, so it’s not so bad after all.

Fix 5 – Use TikTok on Your PC’s Browser

An alternative to using the mobile browser is to use TikTok on your computer’s browser. Again, the experience is similar to using the mobile app, only that this time, you would need to scroll up with your mouse instead of your fingers…unless, of course, you are using a touchscreen PC.

To use TikTok on PC:

1. Open a browser on your computer and go to tiktok.com

2. Click on Log In at the top right corner of the screen

3. You will be presented with different login options. Select the one that applies to you and complete your login to start using TikTok on PC

Note: Some users may prefer to use TikTok without logging in. However, note that if you do not log in on the mobile browser or PC browser, you will not be able to view comments on videos, never mind post a comment. This is different on the mobile app where you can view comments without logging in.

Fix 6 – Uninstall and Reinstall the App

Back to troubleshooting the TikTok app on your phone, if the problem of X at the top left of the screen persists after logging out and logging back in, updating the app, and clearing the cache, it is possible that the TikTok app on your phone has developed a more serious bug which can only be resolved by uninstalling the app and then installing a new one.

To do this:

1. Long-press on the TikTok app on your home screen

2. Select Uninstall or Remove, depending on your phone OS

3. Confirm to uninstall TikTok

4. Then, head over to your phone’s application store, search for TikTok and install it afresh

Fix 7 – Contact TikTok Support

It is very unlikely that the issue will persist after you have installed a new version of the TikTok app on your phone. But if it does, it may be time to reach out to TikTok and report the problem. There may be a serious problem on TikTok which they are not yet aware of.

To contact TikTok support:

1. Open TikTok app on your phone

2. Take a screenshot of the X at the top left of the screen

3. Then, tap the Profile tab

4. Select Menu (three-line icon at the top right)

5. Select Settings and Privacy

6. Scroll down to the Support section and tap on Report a Problem

7. Here, you can select any category. For example, select Notifications

8. On the Notifications report page, you can select Push Notifications, then Customized Push Notifications

9. A window will open giving you suggestions and asking if it was helpful. Select NO

10. Select Need More Help?

11. Then type in your error message, attach the screenshot that you took earlier, and then click on Report

Fix 8 – Wait For Them To Come Out With A Fix

It is also possible that TikTok are aware of this glitch on the app and are working to fix it. And, if there weren’t already aware, you have now informed them using the step above.

So, at this point, all you can do is wait for them to come out with a fix. This would normally mean that you would need to update TikTok when the fix is out. So, make sure that your apps are set to update automatically, or at least, that you check for TikTok updates regularly.

3. TikTok Is Down

Finally, it could be that the problem is not just a bug causing the X to appear on your screen, but it could be that the entire TikTok service is down. TikTok has over 1 billion monthly active users.

These users generate lots of traffic from uploading, downloading, and sharing videos all the time. This can cause a lot of strain on TikTok servers and cause them to go down occasionally.

Also, things like unplanned server shutdown, misconfigurations, and even security breaches can cause TikTok to go down and start malfunctioning. On such occasions, you can only wait for TikTok servers to go back up and the X should go away when you click on it.

Fix – Wait For TikTok To Go Back Up
