PS4 Won't Find Hotspot

If you are using a hotspot for your PS4, you may have encountered situations where the hotspot network does not show up in available connections on your PS4 console.

In this article, we are going to address all the issues that arise when trying to set up your PS4 internet to find your hotspot.

Why Isn’t My Hotspot Showing Up on My PS4?

1. You Are Using the Wrong Frequency

With the advent of the 5G network, many devices are now connecting to 5G mobile and Wi-Fi networks to enjoy faster internet connections. And you may have at some point set your PS4 to connect to a 5G Wi-Fi network.

However, most mobile data connections still use the 2.4GHz frequency, as does the standard PS4 console.

So, if you are trying to connect your PS4 to a mobile hotspot or dedicated hotspot device, you need to ensure that you set your PS4 to connect to 2.4GHz frequency networks or at least set it to Automatic.

If you do not do this, the PS4 will not be able to detect your mobile hotspot or dedicated hotspot device network, resulting in the issue of your hotspot not showing up on the PS4 console.

Fix – Change Network Frequency Settings

If you at some point had set your PS4 to connect to a 5 GHz frequency, you need to change the setting to allow the PS4 to find and connect to lower frequency networks.

Even if you did not make this setting yourself, it is possible that someone else who may have had access to your PS4 or a glitch in the PS4 network adapter has caused it to stop detecting lower frequency networks.

Therefore, follow the steps below to set your PS4 to detect lower-frequency networks and find your mobile hotspot or dedicated hotspot network:

1. Press the PlayStation button to bring up the main menu

2. Then scroll to the right and select Settings

3. Scroll down the settings menu and select Network

4. Next, select Setup Internet Connection

5. Then select Use Wi-Fi

6. On the Wi-Fi page, select Easy

7. At this point, you may not see your mobile hotspot network.

8. From the menu at the bottom of the page, click on Options Menu

9. Then select Wi-Fi Frequency Bands

10. From the frequency bands options, you can either select Automatic or 2.4 GHz only

We recommend that you select Automatic so that your PS4 will be able to detect both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network frequencies

Once you have done this, go back to the Wi-Fi setup page, and your mobile hotspot or dedicated hotspot network should be visible.

Standard PS4 only supports 2.4 GHz frequency.

PS4 slim and PS4 pro support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

So if you’re using a standard PS4, then stick to 2.4 GHz. If you are using PS4 slim or PS4 pro, then you can set the frequency to automatic so that it can choose the best frequency according to the settings on your mobile hotspot

2. Hotspot SSID hidden

Another rather obvious but common reason why your mobile hotspot may not show up on PS4 is that the SSID of the hotspot is actually hidden.

Hotspot, just like Bluetooth, has the feature to either make it visible for nearby devices to see and connect to it or make it hidden for extra security purposes.

However, if you have at some point set the hotspot to be hidden, or it is hidden by default, your PS4 will not be able to discover and connect to it.

Therefore, if you find that your hotspot does not show up on your PS4 and you have confirmed that you have set the right frequency on the PS4 console, the next thing you need to do is to confirm that the SSID of the mobile hotspot is visible for nearby devices to discover and connect.

Fix – Set SSID to visible

To set your hotspot SSID to be visible, you simply need to go into the phone’s native hotspot settings and make sure that it is set to visible.

On Android

1. The quickest way to access the hotspot settings on an Android phone and make the necessary adjustments is as described below:

2. Swipe down from the top of the screen of your phone

3. Press and hold Hotspot in quick settings

4. This will reveal the hotspot settings directly

5. Click on Set Up Hotspot

6. Depending on your Android phone brand, you will see a setting for hiding or making the SSID discoverable. Tap on this to set it to discoverable.

If the quick setting described above is not available on your Android phone, follow the steps below to access the hotspot settings:

1. Tap Settings on your Android phone

2. Click on mobile hotspot if this is immediately available in settings. If it is not available, you may click on network and sharing to access the hotspot settings

3. Next, click on Setup Hotspot and then choose the option to make the hotspot SSID visible or discoverable

On iPhone:

iPhones do not have a direct setting to make the hotspot SSID discoverable or not. If you are having discoverability issues with your iPhone hotspot on PS4, here’s what you need to do:

1. Open settings on your iPhone and tap on Hotspot

2. If you do not see a hotspot, tap on cellular and then enable hotspot

3. In the hotspot settings, first, make sure that Allow Others to Join is turned on

4. Then, importantly, leave this page open on your phone and then get on your PS4 to search for the mobile hotspot and connect to it.

5. Leaving your iPhone on the hotspot settings page is the way to guarantee that it is discoverable by other nearby devices.

6. Once you have completed the settings on your Android phone or iPhone, go ahead and check whether the mobile hotspot is now discoverable by your PS4.

3. Maximise Compatibility On iPhone or Switch Frequencies on Android

In the first fix above, we talked about how the network frequency setting on your PS4 could be the cause of your mobile hotspot not showing up on the PS4 console. But the issue could also be on the hotspot frequency settings on your phone.

Say, for example, your PS4 is set to 2.4 GHz, and your phone frequency is set to 5GHZ, then your mobile hotspot will not show up on your PS4.

Therefore, after making the necessary frequency adjustments on your PS4, you need to also head over to your smartphone and make the necessary frequency adjustments on the mobile hotspot using the guide below:

Fix – On iPhone, turn on Maximise Compatibility

iPhone does not have a setting to set the mobile hotspot frequency to a particular frequency value.

Because of this, you would need to make sure that you turn on Maximize Compatibility in the iPhone mobile hotspot settings. What this does is enable the iPhone to switch between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz according to the requirements of the connecting devices.

Follow the steps below to do this:

1. Open settings on your iPhone and tap on Hotspot

2. If you do not see a hotspot, tap on cellular and then enable hotspot

3. In the hotspot settings, first, make sure that Allow Others to Join is turned on

4. Then, at the bottom of the page, toggle to turn on Maximize Compatibility

Fix 2 – On Android, Switch Frequencies

Android phones do not have a setting to automatically switch mobile hotspot frequencies according to the requirements of connecting devices.

Because of this, you would need to manually switch the hotspot frequencies between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz in order to match the frequency in use by your PS4.

Therefore, if your PS4 is not able to discover your mobile hotspot on one frequency, switch to the other frequency and check if it is discoverable using the steps below:

Tap settings on your Android phone

Click on Mobile Hotspot if this is immediately available in settings. If it is not available, you may click on Network and Sharing to access the hotspot settings

Next, click on Setup Hotspot

On the hotspot settings page, click on Select Band and switch between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz until your mobile hotspot shows up on the PS4 console

4. You Blocked Your PS4

If you have ever used your mobile hotspot on your PS4, you would know that the PS4 connects to your mobile hotspot automatically as long as your mobile hotspot is turned on.

Because of this, you may have decided to disconnect the PS4 from your mobile hotspot because you needed the mobile hotspot turned on for some other purpose.

What you may not have realized is that if you disconnect a device using the mobile hotspot settings on your phone, you have effectively blocked the device from ever connecting to your mobile hotspot. This applies to most smartphones.

Therefore, if you have ever disconnected your PS4 from your mobile hotspot using the mobile hotspot settings, it is likely that you have blocked the PS4 which makes it unable to discover your mobile hotspot.

To fix this, you need to unblock your PS4 from your mobile hotspot settings using the steps below:

Tap settings on your Android phone.

Click on Mobile Hotspot if this is immediately available in settings. If it is not available, you may click on network and sharing to access the hotspot settings.

Next, click on Connected Devices.

Then click on Blocklist.

See if your PS4 is in the blocklist, then tap on it to unblock it from the list.

After doing this, go back to your PS4 and search again for your mobile hotspot to see if it now shows up on the PS4 console.

5. Bug on PS4

Another possible reason why your hotspot is not showing up on your PS4 console is that a bug has occurred on the PS4 console.

The issue with bugs is that it is often difficult to ascertain the root cause of the bug and resolve it. Because of this, you are left with no option but to use a trial-and-error approach to fix the bugs.

Therefore, to fix a bug on PS4 that may be causing your hotspot not to show up on the PS4, you need to try the fix below:

Fix 1: Restart PS4

The very first option to take when trying to resolve a bug is to restart the device.

Restarting the device makes sure that all the programs, software, and hardware that control the device are offloaded and then reloaded properly in order to make them start functioning well.

Restarting the PS4 will also reset the network adaptor on the PS4, which may have suffered a glitch and caused it to be unable to discover your mobile hotspot.

Restarting will also reinitialize the connection between your PS4 and other devices nearby and hopefully make the hotspot start showing up on your PS4 console again.

Follow the steps below to restart your PS4 console:

Press and hold the PS4 button on your controller.

A quick menu will appear asking you to either enter rest mode, turn off PS4, or restart PS4.

Select to restart PS4 and confirm the action when prompted.

When your PS4 console restarts completely, go back to network settings and check if you can now discover your mobile hotspot.

Fix 2 – Reset Network Settings

If restarting the PS4 console does not resolve the issue of your hotspot not showing up, you should try resetting the network settings on your PS4.

This is because the problem may be a result of a more serious bug that affects only the network adapter on your PS4, which requires the PS4 to delete all network configurations on the console in order to clear the bug.

Please note that resetting network settings will delete all saved networks and their passwords. However, if it is important to connect your PS4 to your mobile hotspot, then this is a small price to pay to achieve the goal.

Follow the steps below to reset network settings on the PS4 console:

1. Press the PlayStation button to bring up Settings or from the home screen, click on Settings.

2. Scroll to the bottom of the settings page and click on Initialisation.

3. Next, click on Restore Default Settings.

4. On the next page, you will see a list of all the settings that will be reset if you complete this process.

Review the settings and see whether it is something you are willing to proceed with. We recommend that you go ahead with this process because it is almost guaranteed to resolve the network issues that may be causing your hotspot not to show up on PlayStation 4.

Rest assured that your saved games and any saved data on your PS4 disc will not be erased.

So if you want to go ahead with this, then click on restore.

6. Bug on Phone

If the bug is not on your PS4 console, then it is possible that the bug has occurred on your phone instead. Just as with the PS4, tracing the root cause of the bug on your phone can be quite difficult.

However, unlike with the PS4, you do not need to reset the network settings on your phone to resolve the issue of the hotspot not showing up on your PS4.

Instead, you simply have to restart the phone to fix any issues that may be causing the hotspot to not be discoverable on the PS4 console.

7. Phone or Hotspot Device Too Far Away

This should probably have been first on the list, but we have assumed that if you have been using a hotspot for PS4, then it is a known fact that the phone or hotspot device should be close enough to the PS4 in order for it to be discoverable by the PS4.

Unlike a Wi-Fi router, a mobile hotspot has less range and so is not able to send strong signals enough to be discovered beyond about 32 ft or 10 meters.

If your phone or any dedicated hotspot device is farther than this, it may be difficult for your PS4 to discover the hotspot network hence the issue of the hotspot not showing up on the PS4 console.

Fix – Bring hotspot closer

So, if you have tried all the fixes listed above in this article and you find that the hotspot still does not show up on your PS4 console, then try and bring the phone or dedicated hotspot device closer to the PS4 and see if it becomes discoverable on the console.
