Snapchat may not work even when you’re connected to WI-FI. There are many reasons why you’ll start to receive the ‘Could Not Connect’ message and there are several ways you can fix this. Usually, when Snapchat couldn’t connect, you may also see that it says other connection errors such as Connection Failed or please check your connection since there’s a problem with your network.
Why Is My Snapchat Saying Could Not Connect?
The main reason Snapchat shows the Could not Connect message is because of your connection to the internet. Even if you’re connected to WI-FI, your router may not be connected to the internet. Turn your router on, then off to try and force it to connect to the internet.
There are plenty of reasons Snapchat can stop working randomly. This problem is known for happening very often within Snapchat and the issue starts to circulate around social media with everyone saying Snapchat is down. If Snapchat is down and it says Could Not Connect, then you need to make sure that you wait for the problem to be fixed before your Snapchat can connect again.
Server and maintenance issues are a commonality within Snapchat and when it says ‘Could not Connect’, this can be because of network issues as well as maintenance issues.
Check Your Internet Connection
Since Snapchat can’t connect, the first place that you should be looking to fix this is your network. Since your network is what allows you to have an internet connection, then you need to make sure that you check that you have a strong internet connection. You can change your network connection to receive a stronger one by switching from WIFI to data and vice versa. Another route you can take is switching your router off then back on. Once you’ve done this, go back to Snapchat and check if it’s connecting.
Check if Snapchat Servers are Down
This is definitely the most common reason why Snapchat will be down and won’t work properly. Snapchat usually does routine maintenance and when they do this, you won’t be able to use Snapchat properly until they’re done.
When Snapchat is down due to routine maintenance, you’ll see a rush of complaints on social media with everyone having the same issue. To check whether Snapchat Servers are down, you can easily do a search in Google saying, ‘is Snapchat down’.
You see a few news websites saying Snapchat servers are down. If you are active on social media, you’ll either see your friends talking about it, or you can go to the Instagram search bar, type in Snapchat, then click on tags.
You’ll see posts saying things such as “is your Snapchat working?”. If this is the case, you’ll have to wait for their servers to go back online. This can take up to a few hours but once it’s done, try going back to Snapchat to check if the could not connect message is gone.
Turn Off VPNs
If there’s a problem with your internet connection being able to access Snapchat, this could cause the Could Not Connect error to show. Because of this, you need to make sure that you’re able to access Snapchat using your network connection. To fix this, you can install a VPN called Betternet and this should help you fix the network problem that you’re having with Snapchat that’s causing errors to show up.
Reset Network Settings
The next step you want to take when Snapchat isn’t working is to ‘Reset Network Settings’. There could be a network problem if Snapchat isn’t working even when it’s connected to WI-FI.
If you know your WI-FI is working properly but Snapchat isn’t working regardless, you’ll have to reset your network settings.
If you want to reset all of your network settings:
- Go to the Settings app
- Go to the General settings
- Scroll all the way down and tap on reset
- Tap on ‘Reset Network Settings’
- You’ll receive a pop-up, then tap on ‘Reset Network Settings’ again
Resetting your network settings is going to clear all the settings you’ve made since you got your iPhone. Your WI-FI settings, Bluetooth settings, and wallpapers will be reset.
When your iPhone or iPad boots back up, you’ll need to go back to settings and enter your WI-FI passwords. Once you have done this, go back into Snapchat and see if it‘s working. If the could not connect message still comes back up, go to the next step.
Update Snapchat If One Is Available
The first solution to stop this message from coming up is to update the Snapchat app. When there is an update available for Snapchat, it’s likely that there is a bug in the current version you’re using.
New updates are made to fix bugs and to add new features. If you’re not using the current version of Snapchat, you can run into a lot of problems.
For example, you’ll receive the ‘Could Not Connect’ message, your snaps won’t send, or the app will continue to crash. Here’s how to update Snapchat if there’s one available:
- Go to the App Store
- Tap on the ‘Update’ tab at the bottom right of the screen
- Locate the Snapchat app and click the Update button next to it
Once you’ve updated the app, open Snapchat to see if Snapchat is working and if the error message has gone.
Delete and Re-install Snapchat
If none of the steps above have worked, you can go ahead and Delete the Snapchat app.
The problem may be within Snapchat itself so deleting and then re-installing it will refresh the app and solve any issues within the app.
To delete and then re-install Snapchat:
- Hold on the app and wait for the ‘x’ to come up
- Tap on the ‘x’ and click ‘Delete’ to confirm your decision (this may take a while)
- Go back to the App Store and download Snapchat
Once Snapchat is installed, try and log into the app and see if you can log in without the could not connect message coming up.
