This can be a frustrating issue and many users have reported their screens being too dark and not knowing what’s caused it. I’m going to show you what caused this and how you can fix it.
There can be a few settings you’ve changed which can cause your iPhone or iPad to get dark. The best way to fix this is to reset the screen settings by turning bold text and then off.
Go to the Settings app > Tap on Display & Brightness > turn Bold text on, then off after your device has rebooted. Down below are more ways to fix this problem.
Why is my iPhone Screen is too Dark?
The first reason why your iPhone screen is too dark is because of something you’ve set in the Settings app.
There are actually a few different settings that have the power to change the brightness of your iPhone display without you knowing. I’m going to show you how to change this setting further in the article.
Another reason your iPhone is too dark may be that the screen is damaged. If you’ve recently dropped your device on the floor or it’s got water damage, you’ll need to get your LCD screen fixed.

The last reason your iPhone or iPad may be too dim is because of a minor or major software issue.
There are multiple ways you can fix this type of issue and I’m going to show you how to do just that in the settings app.
Step 1: Make sure the Brightness is fully on
The first step you can take to get your iPhone or iPad screen back to normal again is to go ahead and make sure the brightness is fully on.
This Is the most obvious step to take but it’s always good to make sure that your brightness is fully up, and some new users may not know how to do this.
To push your brightness up, you can swipe up from the bottom of your iPhone to access the control centre, you’ll see a cursor, make sure it’s swiped all the way up.
If you swiped the cursor up and your screen brightness went up, the brightness was too low.
Step 2: Switch Bold Text on and off
The next step to take is to simply turn the bold text on and off in the settings app. Doing this is going to reset the screen settings on your iPhone or iPad.
This is probably the best solution to fixing your screens brightness and not many people know about it. To turn bold text on and off:
- Go to the Settings
- Tap on Display & Brightness
- Toggle Bold Text on
You’re going to receive a pop-up warning you that your iPhone is going to restart. Click on the restart button and your device is going to turn off then back on.
Once your device has turned on, go back into the same settings and toggle off the bold text option. This should have fixed the issue and if it did, comment down below.
Step 3: Check the White Point Settings
If the steps above didn’t work, the next thing to do is to check your White point settings.
The white point settings have the ability to make your iPhone or iPad a lot dimmer because the purpose of it is to reduce harsh colours on your display.
You may have accidentally turned this on or someone may have meddled with your device changing your white point settings in the process. To change your white point settings:
- Go to the Settings app
- Tap on the General
- Tap on Accessibility
- Go to Display Accommodations
- If the ‘Reduce White Point’ is on, toggle it off
You can also check how intense it was by checking the percentage on the right.
Step 4: Increase the Contrast
The next reason your iPhone or iPad may be too dim is because of the contrast of your device.
If the contrast settings on your device are turned on, this can cause your display to look a bit dimmer than normal. To change your contrast:
- Go to the settings app
- Tap on General
- Go to Accessibility
- Tap on ‘Increase Contrast’
- Toggle off ‘Reduce Transparency’ and ‘Darken Colours’
If both of these were turned on, this could have caused your device to look darker. If your device is still dim, go to the next step.
Step 5: Turn off Auto Brightness
The next step to try and solve this problem is to make sure that auto-brightness isn’t turn on.
This allows your screen to change your brightness depending on the light around you. If auto-brightness is turned on, this can cause your device to look considerably darker. You can change this in the Settings app.
- Go to General
- Tap on Accessibility
- Go to Magnify
- Make sure this is turned off
Step 6: Reset all Settings
If a software issue is causing your iPhone or iPad screen to be dim, reset all settings is going to fix this.
There may be a minor problem with the settings app due to all the settings you’ve made within the app and reset all settings is going to reset all of them. To reset all settings:
- Launch the settings app
- Go to General
- Tap on reset at the bottom
- Hit Reset All Settings
- Enter your password and confirm your decision
Your device is then going to restart. Once it’s restarted, all your settings should be wiped and you should be able to notice that your screen is a lot less dim.
Step 7: Repair your LCD Display
The last option is to get your LCD Display repaired because it’s most likely damaged. Going to the Apple store is the best option for this but, you’ll need to go to the store and schedule an appointment. After you’ve scheduled it, they will give you a date to come in which could take a few weeks.
