There is no easy way to record calls on iPhone, as Apple doesn’t allow third-party apps to tap into the microphone and the Phone app. Recording a phone call could come in handy in several situations.
If you’re having an interview and want to listen to it later, then you want to record the call. It can come in handy in various other scenarios as well. For example, if you’re talking to an ex-partner or employee and want to record them harassing or blackmailing you, the record feature will be useful. Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, there is no record call button on the iPhone.
Recording phone calls is also considered illegal in certain regions, so you may want to look in to that before you get caught up in something bad. It is better to get permission to record instead of facing legal issues later. Therefore, remember to tell the other person on the call that they’re being recorded before you hit the record button.
Record Calls on iPhone with External Hardware
The easiest way to record a phone call on iPhone, is to use an external recording device. You could purchase a voice recorder and use it to record calls on iPhone.
When you receive a call that you want to be recorded, simply put the iPhone in loudspeaker mode and record using the external recorded. You can record for as long as you want and then play it back whenever you like.
You can even buy voice recorders that connect to the 3.5mm headphone jack, assuming you have an older iPhone with this port. Such a device will route the audio to the recorder and then play it on its own loudspeaker. This way, you will be able to hear the call, as well as record it. Some external recorders also have a 3.5mm headphone jack so you can listen to the conversation in private.
That’s the simplest thing you can do, but there are limitations. You cannot do this everywhere, as you would need to place your iPhone in loudspeaker mode to record the call. It is better to be in a private area when you’re using this method. Now that the simplest method is out of the way, let’s get to the slightly complicated methods.
Using Google Voice to Record Calls
If you use the Google Voice service, then you can easily record voice calls on the iPhone. Using this service will announce that voice recording has begun to all those who are on the call. Therefore, if you are using this to record calls on iPhone, then make sure that your callers are ready for it and you have their consent.
The Google Voice service will record incoming calls only, so if you want to record an outgoing call, then you’re out of luck. Also, you will need to port your mobile number to Google to use the call recording feature.
Google’s Voice isn’t available everywhere in the world. So if you’re in a region where the service isn’t, then you won’t be able to record calls. As of now, the service is only available to iPhone users in the United States.
However, if you do have Google Voice in your region and have the app on your iPhone, then you can do the following to start recording calls.
1. Launch the Google Voice app on your iPhone.
2. In the left side of the app, tap the hamburger menu.
3. Now navigate to the Settings section.
5. Look for the Calls option and turn on ‘Incoming call options’.
Now that you have enabled this option, you will be able to record incoming calls on your Google Voice number. When you receiving a call on the Google Voice app, perform the following steps to record the call.
1. To start recording the call, tap the number 4.
2. The call recording will be announced to all participants.
3. To stop recording the call, tap number 4 once again.
4. You can also stop recording by hanging up the phone call.
The recorded phone calls can be accessed from the Voicemail tab. And that’s how you record calls on iPhone using the Google Voice app. It is easy, but will only work in places where the service is available, which means that not everyone will be able to use this method. To access the recorded calls, follow the steps below:
1. Launch the Voice app.
2. Tap on the Menu option on the left top corner.
3. Find the Recorded category.
4. Look for the call that you just recorded.
5. Tap on it to play the call by pressing the play button.
Use Third-party Paid Call recording Apps
There are several apps available on the App Store that will allow you to record calls on iPhone. Of course, these apps will cost you some money, but will provide you with the option to record calls. Let’s take a look at one such app that’s available on the App Store.
This app will cost you $11, but will provide you with unlimited call recording for one year. However, there are additional costs involved with this app, such as a renewal charge of $4 month or $30 for another year. It doesn’t work like the Google Voice service and can record outgoing voice calls as well.
When you receive a call, you will need to put that person on hold, then launch this app to hit the record button. This will initiate a merged call with the caller and the entire call will be recorded on to a remote server. For this to work, your carrier will need to support three-way calling.
If you want to record an outgoing voice call, you will first need to launch the app, hit the record button and then make the call. It will then merge the call with the service and start recording it. This app will not notify the other person that the call is being recorded. If you’re in a place where call recording is illegal, then you will need to inform them that they are being recorded.
Once the recording is completed, you will be able to listen to them through the app. The recording can also be shared via Email, messages, etc. You can even download the recordings and listen to them on another device. Check out TapeACall Pro on the Apple App Store.
There are other similar apps available on the App Store, which can be a little cheaper. You can try them out as well, but make sure you read the reviews before trying them. We recommended one of the best call recorder apps for iPhone, but you can look for others.
Using on-device Voice Mail
The following method is not guaranteed to work for all, but you can try it out if the above methods aren’t working for you. This method involves using your own Voice Mail feature. It will work only if your carrier supports 3-way calling and the visual voice mail. This will be free if it works for you.
When you’re on a call, if you see the Add Call option, tap on it and call yourself or the caller. If Visual voicemail is supported, then the call will not connect, but it will connect to the voicemail and start recording.
Now get back on the call and merge calls. Since all the calls are now merged and your voicemail recorder is on, it should record the call. However, this will not record for long as carriers add limitations to this feature. After the call is done, you can listen to the recording in the Voice mail tab. You can also export these recordings as audio files from the iPhone Phone app.
