When temperatures start to drop, you may start experiencing something unusual with your devices. Many Android phone users have experienced their devices turning off in cold weather.
Why Does My Phone Turn Off When it’s Cold?
Phone manufacturers have warned their users that their device can turn off as temperatures drop and they should expect it.
This may sound weird but your Android phone or your other devices can actually turn off when the temperature is too cold and you’re not the only one that’s experiencing it, many Android phone users have reported this issue and they want to know why it’s happening.
The reason your phone turns off when it’s cold is due to the lithium-ion battery inside. In a lithium-ion battery, each cell is made up of a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and an electrolyte in-between each cell.
When the temperature of your phone drops below freezing, the electrolyte liquid inside the lithium battery crystallizes. This prevents a current from flowing through the battery which stops the phone from working, which is why your phone will turn off.
For Google’s Pixel users, it’s advised for use in temperatures between 32 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit and not below -4 degrees Fahrenheit. Samsung doesn’t give a recommended temperature range, other than noting on its website that ‘your phone operates optimally at a normal temperature range.’ This suggests that the performance will degrade when your phone is cold. Samsung has also stated on their website that ‘Extreme heat and cold can damage your battery. ‘For example, don’t leave your smartphone in the glove compartment of your car on very hot or cold days. ‘A common myth is that batteries last longer if they are put in the freezer. This is not correct and can damage your battery,’ it continues.
How to Stop Your Phone From Turning Off When it’s Cold
The first thing you can do to stop your phone from turning off when it’s cold is to simply increase the temperature of your battery. You can do this by keeping it somewhere warm such as under your pillow. If you live in a cold climate, leave your phone in your pocket most of the time so that it can have time to warm up.
A temperature that phone manufacturers recommend that you store your phone at is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Obviously, your phone will performance normally slightly beyond these ranged however, anything extreme can cause your phone to turn off.
Replace Your Phone’s Battery
The last thing you can do to fix this problem is to simply replace your battery because the chances are, your phone is turning off randomly is because the battery is worn out and when it’s cold, this can happen more often.
If you have an Android, you can get your battery replaced for relatively cheap if the device is out of warranty. If you do have a warranty, many manufacturers like Samsung will allow you to replace your battery for free.
You can go to the Samsung store nearest to you and set up an appointment to replace your battery. This can take a few weeks.
