It is safe to assume that almost all of us have experienced the disheartening scenario of calling someone only to get two rings in on the call, and then it goes straight to voicemail.
It is equally safe to assume that some of us have been wondering why this has occurred, and luckily, we can break it down for you while providing possible reasons why it has happened, then giving you the knowledge and tools to fix the problem.
There are several possibilities as to why the call rings twice and goes straight to voicemail; without further ado, let us get to the bottom of this issue.
Why Does Phone Ring Twice Then Goes to Voicemail?
As previously mentioned, there are several possibilities as to why the call you are attempting to make is ringing twice, then is sent straight to voicemail. Did you know that the number of rings before the call is sent to voicemail is adjustable?
1. Their Phone is on DND
It certainly is a possibility that the person you are attempting to call has their phone set to “Do Not Disturb.”
When this feature is engaged, it effectively makes it to that the phone user will not be notified of any notifications, phone calls, or text messages that have been sent to them.
It is very common for someone to turn this feature on when they are doing something that requires their full attention with no interruptions; it is all in the title for this one; they desire not to be disturbed.
This could certainly cause your phone call to ring twice and then go straight to voicemail, as they will not be alerted to your phone call.
This is a real bummer, but it is also possible that they have accidentally engaged the “Do Not Disturb” feature since this option is typically located on the quick menu that can be dragged down from the top of a smartphone.
With this in mind, you can see how easy it can be for them to be using the quick select menu and accidentally tap on the DND (Do Not Disturb) option.
Fix 1 – Call Them Again
If you believe that they have turned on their do not disturb feature by accident or you need to speak to them urgently, you can try calling them back.
If they did engage the DND option by accident, it is possible that they have recognized their mistake in the time that it took you to place the phone call, resulting in them picking up the call when you call back.
Now, if you attempt to call them back and you get the same results, or the call rings once (or not at all) and goes straight to voicemail.
This could mean that they turned on the DND option intentionally, and in such a scenario, it would be best to leave them be, as they do not want to take any calls at the moment.
It can be pretty challenging to reach someone when they have accidentally turned on their do not disturb feature since when you place the call, their phone will not light up, vibrate, or make any sound to notify them that a call was missed.
Instead, it will simply send the call to voicemail no matter what you do.
With that said, if you, by chance, have other means of reaching out to them, such as through an email or through a social media app like Facebook, Instagram, and or Twitter, you can attempt contacting them through those services.
Do note that if they do, in fact, have their do not disturb feature engaged on their smartphone, and you try to message them on a social media app. They will likely not be alerted to the message.
If they have a PC or a landline phone number, you can attempt to reach out to them that way.
2. They Ended the Call
When you or anyone else receives a phone call on their smartphone, you or they can answer it.
Although you can also end the call before it has even begun by either swiping down on the call or by tapping on the “Dismiss” option when the call appears.
Now, it is possible for this to happen by accident since accidents are almost always a possibility, especially with touch screens being sensitive to the smallest amount of skin contact.
With that said, it is also equally possible that they ended or dismissed the call by choice, which can mean that they cannot take the phone call right at that moment.
They could be in a meeting or having a conversation that they would rather not be interrupted by any phone calls during it; there are many possible reasons why they have opted not to answer your phone call.
Fix 1 – Call Them Back Later
If you believe that the person you are calling has chosen to dismiss your phone call or even by accident, it can be best to try calling them back later.
Since it is likely that they are in the middle of doing something to where they cannot answer your call at that time.
If possible, you could send them a text message that lets them know that you would like for them to call you back when they can. You could also send them an email (if possible), notifying them to call you back when they are available.
3. The Phone Is On Airplane Mode
When encountering this complication of calling someone and having the call ring twice, it goes straight to voicemail; you may want to consider if they may have their phone on airplane mode.
If you are not familiar, Airplane Mode or also referred to as “Flight Mode,” is an optional setting on smartphones that will suspend signals and WiFi connection for the time that it is engaged, the rest of the smartphone will function fine, but text messages, phone calls, and notifications will not come through to the user.
You may have used this feature if you have gone on a flight and still wanted to listen to music you have downloaded on your smartphone.
Since when this feature is activated, no calls or texts can be received or alert the user that a call has been missed, you can see how this can cause your call to receive two rings and be sent to voicemail treatment.
This feature can be found and engaged on an Android smartphone by either swiping down from the top of the screen or double tapping at the top of the screen.
Then the settings panel will drop down, and you should see the “Airplane Mode” icon symbolized with an airplane; then tap on it to initialize airplane mode.
On the iPhone iOS smartphones, you can access and turn on airplane mode by swiping down from the upper right-hand corner of the
screen, which will show the Control Center menu, where you should be able to locate the airplane mode and then select it to activate the airplane mode.
Fix 1 – Call Them on WhatsApp If They Have Their WIFI On
A viable answer to this issue of the person you are attempting to call has their phone on airplane mode is to contact them through the WhatsApp application.
Keep in mind that airplane mode will typically shut off their WiFi connection, so this is not a 100% guarantee to work, but it very well might work.
You can voice call the person you are attempting to reach through the WhatsApp application. However, you will both need to have a good internet connection, preferably a strong WiFi network internet connection.
Once you both have that, you will also need to be having a conversation on WhatsApp with the person in question, and if you do not have a conversation going with them, you will have to start one so that you can use the voice call option.
With all of that said, it can be hard to determine whether or not they have a WiFi connection; however, you can make an educated guess by checking their “Last Seen” on WhatsApp, and this is only if they also have a WhatsApp account and are on your contacts.
To access the “Last Seen” option for your account on the WhatsApp application, you can follow these simple steps:
Step 1. Firstly, starting from your device’s home screen, you will want to start by opening your WhatsApp application up.
Step 2. Once the app is opened, you can go ahead and select the three vertical dots in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
Step 3. Then from the appearing menu, you should tap on the “Settings” option to open the settings options menu.
Step 4. Next, you will need to select the “Account” option.
Step 5. Then, from the Account menu screen, tap on the “Privacy” option.
Step 6. Here, you can locate and select your “Last Seen” settings.
Remember, this is to adjust the settings of your “Last Seen” on the WhatsApp application.
To see the “Last Seen” for the person you are attempting to call, you will need to go to the conversation between you two on the WhatsApp application (if you have one going), and their “Last Seen” message should be located right at the top of the screen.
If you believe that they do have a reliable internet connection, such as a WiFi connection, then you will want to go to the conversation page between the two of you.
On the conversation page, in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, you should see and tap on the call button.
Once you have done that, you will want to select the “Contacts” tab at the bottom of the screen; then, you should be able to tap on the contact name of the person you would like to call.
After you have done that, the contact’s information should come up, and this is where you can select the “Call” option to call them via the WhatsApp application.
4. Person Blocked Your Number
The issue of attempting to call someone only to get two rings, then the call is sent to their voicemail, could be caused by the person you are calling has blocked you.
In this scenario, it can be challenging to contact the person in question since when someone blocks your phone number, they will not receive any text messages you have sent, and if you attempt to call them.
You are likely to get maybe two rings, and then you will hear a message like “The customer you’re trying to reach is unavailable.” Your call will then be directed to their voicemail; this can be a telltale sign that the person you are trying to call has blocked your phone number.
Fix 1 – Put Your Number on No Caller ID and Call Them
If you believe the person you are attempting to call has blocked you, which will be evident if you have tried calling for the past few days and every time you have, you receive the same two call rings and then are sent straight to their voicemail.
This pretty much guarantees that they have, in fact, blocked your phone number. However, do not despair since there is a method to reach them by the same phone number still.
This method consists of you hiding your caller ID on your smartphone so that when you call them, their phone, be it Android or iPhone, will not be able to detect your phone number. In turn, this will allow you to call them and potentially get an answer.
To hide/block your phone number on your iPhone, you can follow these three simple steps:
Step 1. First, starting at the home screen of your iPhone, you will want to go to and open your Settings app.
Step 2. Then you can locate and select the “Phone” option.
Step 3. Once you have done that, you can tap on the “Show My Caller ID” option. Under these options, you will be able to toggle the switch slide to hide your phone number.
This will effectively hide your phone number for any phone calls made on your iPhone after hiding your number.
If you are using an Android smartphone, you can also hide/block your phone number from appearing on the phone call you wish to make.
There are also two ways you can go about this, you can either hide your phone number via the Google Voice App, or you can do it by your Android phone settings. The choice is yours, and both sets of steps will be provided below.
To hide/block your phone number on Android via the Google Voice App.
Important Note: When you hide your caller ID in the Google Voice app on one device, it will be hidden on all devices with the same Google Voice account.
Step 1. First, starting at the home screen of your Android, you will want to locate and open the Google Voice app.
Step 2. Once the application is opened, you can select the menu option at the top left corner of the screen.
Step 3. Next, proceed and tap on the “Settings” option. Under the settings menu, you will want to select the “Calls” option.
Step 4. Here, you will be able to switch on and off the “Anonymous Caller ID” option. When you do not want your phone number hidden, you will have to turn this option off.
Turning on the “Anonymous Caller ID” option via the Google Voice app will hide your phone number. Though this is not the only method for Android users, you can also hide/block your phone number with your Android phone settings. Follow the steps below to do so.
Step 1. Firstly, starting at your Android home screen, you will want to locate and open the Phone app.
Step 2. Once the Phone app is opened, you can tap on the three stacked dots at the top right-hand corner of the screen for an options menu to appear.
Step 3. On the Phone’s options menu, you will want to select the “Settings” option.
Step 4. Next, in the settings, you should see a “Calls” option under the “General” category; tap on the “Calls” option.
Step 5. After that, select the “Additional settings” option, then tap on the “Caller ID” option.
Step 6. Under this menu, you can choose the “Hide Number” option.
This will hide your phone number ID on your Android phone, and you should be able to carry out that phone call now efficiently.
5. Phone is Turned Off Physically (Still Have Energy in Battery)
It is also the neighborhood of possibility that the person you are trying to call has turned off their phone physically. It did not die on its own; it was powered off by the user.
In this scenario, you very well could get the two call rings and then get sent to their voicemail since when a smartphone is manually turned off, it will not receive any phone calls.
The same could be said for text messages that are sent to a powered-down smartphone; the text message will say “Sent,” but it will not be delivered until the next time smartphone is powered back on again.
Fix 1 – Wait Till Their Phone Turns On
As previously stated, when a smartphone is turned off, it will not receive any phone calls, so if you are trying to call the person, they will be none the wiser. In this scenario, you will want to wait for their phone to be turned back on.
If you possibly have other means to contact the person in question, you will want to do so. Perhaps, you can reach them by email or possibly through a chat on your gaming console if they are online and available.
If you have no other way of contacting them, you will have to wait until they turn their phone back on.
If you are calling them late at night and they are in the same time zone as you, you would probably be better off waiting until morning since they likely turned their phone off before going to bed for the night.
6. Person is Physically Forwarding Your Phone Calls
It certainly is within the realm of possibility that the person you are attempting to call is forwarding your phone calls. Unfortunately, there is no current way to tell if the call is being forwarded since the process happens within the span of a second.
When someone has call forwarding activated on their phone, they want any calls that are received on that phone number to be forwarded to another phone number that they get to choose.
With this in mind, if your call is being forwarded, it is technically two phone calls since the call is redirected to another destination.
Knowing this information, and considering that you are still getting two rings and then are sent to their voicemail, it pretty much circles back around to other possible reasons why such as they may have blocked your phone number or have their phone turned off.
7. Your Or They Have Poor Network Reception
Network reception is an integral part of your smartphone, sending and receiving texts, calls, and or emails.
Since you have a poor network reception, some functions can be more difficult to carry out, such as this scenario, where you are trying to reach the person by phone call.
If you have poor network reception, the phone call cannot go through all of the ways, resulting in two call rings, and then you are sent to their voicemail.
The same could be said for if they have poor network reception, their phone will not be able to receive the phone call completely, or the phone call will not register at all.
Which results in their phone defaulting to giving you two rings and then sending you to their voicemail.
It is essential to have at least a decent network reception when you are attempting to place a phone call. It is for the same reason why you may have issues placing a phone call when you are in a canyon.
Since you are down low and have mountains or hills on both sides, the signals will have a more difficult time reaching your device.
In contrast, if you were at the top of one of the hills or mountains at your sides, you would likely have much better network reception since it is much easier for the signals to reach your device.
Fix 1 – Get Into A Better Area and Tell Them To
If you believe this problem to be caused by poor network reception, you will want to move to an area with better network reception. If you are, by chance, out in the wilderness, good network reception can be hard to come by.
Though you will want to seek out an area with higher ground, such as a mountain or hilltop, with little to no tree coverage.
If you are in a vehicle that is not moving, you can try hopping out and finding a spot where you have better network reception; even though it is very minimal, the roofs of a vehicle can impede network reception signals.
Also, if you have a phone case cover on your device, you will want to remove it to improve your network reception, and you could advise the person you are attempting to call to do the same (if possible).
Even though these phone covers offer protection, they can also interrupt network reception.
Another good way to improve your network reception is to remove as many obstructions between you and the cell tower as possible, such as roofs, walls, vehicles, and or trees.
Be sure to check your battery percentage, since if you or they have a low battery on their phone, this can also affect network reception negatively.
Remember, when encountering this issue with phone calls, to check your basics such as network reception, battery percentage, and or that you have the correct phone number.
Since you are almost always one wrong digit away from calling the wrong phone number, be sure that the phone number is valid.
If someone did block you, it is not the worst thing that could happen to you, as there many other ways to get in touch with someone. Also, you could ask them in person if they have blocked you.
Try to practice some patience when experiencing these tech issues, as they are temporary problems that will be resolved.
Remember always to keep your device and its apps updated, as these updates will only improve your experience on your apps and device.
Also, keep in mind that there are typically many ways to contact someone, such as social media apps, text messaging, and email.
We hope you found an answer to your tech problem in this feature, and if you did, perhaps, you share it with a friend or family member that could use some tech help.
