Your lock button can either be jammed or it may not be pushing down properly. When the sleep/wake button isn’t working, this could either be a software or hardware issue. I’m going to show you how to fix this issue using both scenarios.
The most common reason your iPhone’s home button isn’t working is due to the software on your device not responding properly to the home button.
The best way to get the software to hard reset your iPhone or iPad. Go to Settings > tap on General > Hit Reset.
This will clean up the software on your device. Down below are more ways to solve this problem.
Turn on Assistive touch
The first thing you want to do is give yourself a good back up. Fortunately, Apple built one in and it’s called assistive touch.
This will set up a virtual button on the screen of your iPhone plus it has many other functions.
1. Go to Settings
2. Tap General
3. Tap Accessibilities
4. Toggle on Assistive touch
You can do a lot of things with assistive touch such as using it as a home button.
Here’s how you do it:
1. Open the Assistive touch button
2. Press device
3. Press and hold lock screen
4. Swipe right to lock your iPhone
If the power button feels normal to you and you could press it but it’s just not doing anything, it could be a software related problem because it’s your iPhone software that decides what to do whenever you try to do anything on your device.
So, when the power button gets pressed, that’s an event which gets sent to the software.
Before I get to the deeper software fixes, one thing I want to recommend real quick is if you’re using a case on your iPhone, try taking it off and using the power button.
Sometimes the lock screen for the case is too big for you to access the button properly.
Hard Reset your iPhone
A good step with any software issue is to hard reset your iPhone. Now, how are you going to hard reset your iPhone if the power button isn’t working well?
Here’s what you’re going to do:
1. Open the Settings app
2. Tap General
3. Scroll all the way down to ‘Shut Down’
You’re probably thinking, “my power button isn’t working, how am I supposed to turn it back on again”?
When your iPhone or iPad is turned off and you plug it into power, it will turn back on.
The shutdown button in settings is a new iOS 11 feature. If you’re running an older iOS version on your iPhone, you might not see the shutdown option.
If this is the case, you can turn off your iPhone using the Assistive Touch button like I showed you above.
DFU Restore your iPhone or iPad
Make sure that you test your lock button again and see if it’s working. If it works now all of a sudden, you’ve got a software issue and you need to fix that.
When a hardware component isn’t working because of a software issue, it’s usually a pretty deep software problem.
So, what you need to do is a DFU Restore. Before you do a DFU restore, it’s important that you backup your iPhone so you can restore your files again.
It’s best to do an iCloud backup.
Here’s how you can do a DFU Restore on your iPhone or iPad. This will walk you through the entire process.
Repair your iPhone or iPad
Let’s say you were in a situation where your power button was working before but maybe it doesn’t feel right or it’s totally stuck in.
What do you do? Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do apart from repairing it with a certified service.
You probably don’t want to try to break into your iPhone because you could end up doing more harm than good.
There’s a little spring that fits inside the phone that makes your home button work. It’s ‘poppy’ and springy but if it breaks, it’s over for your power button.
I recommend Apple if you have AppleCare+. You can also get your device repaired at Apple if your iPhone is still under warranty.
If you broke your home button and this isn’t a software problem, your warranty is void and you can’t get it replaced for free.
