When you are in a crowded public area and you don’t want your iPhone to ring out loud, this is where vibration comes in hand.
The most common reason for vibrations not to be working is because your vibration motor is broken.
The could have been damaged by you dropping your device. So, the best way to fix this is to get your device repaired. Down below are some more ways to get vibrations to work again.
Basic Step – Make sure Vibrations are on
The first thing to do is just to go into the Settings app and make sure ‘Vibrate on Ring’ and ‘Vibrate on Silent’ are turned on.
- Go to Settings on your iPhone
- Scroll down to Sounds
- At the very top, you’ll see ‘Vibrate on Ring’ and ‘Vibrate on Silent’
- Make sure both of them are toggled On (green)
Make sure those switches are turned on. You’ll know they’re on when they’re green and the switches position positioned to the right.
Make Sure Vibrations Are on in Both Places
There’s a second place to check whether vibrations are on. Let’s say your iPhone is ringing, but it’s not vibrating and ‘Vibrant and Ring’ is turned on. There’s another place to look…
- Go to the Settings app
- Scroll down to Sounds
- Tap on Ringtone
- Toggle on Vibrations at the top
Set Vibrations to Synchronised (default)
Just like ringtones on your iPhone, there are different vibration patterns too. So, synchronised which is the default means that your iPhone is going to vibrate along to the music of your ringtone.
There are other ones that are pretty standard. At the bottom, you’ll see that you can create your own vibration pattern and at the bottom, you’ll also see None.
If None is selected under vibration for ringtone, even if ‘Vibrate on Ring’ is selected in the Settings app, your iPhone still won’t vibrate when it rings. So make sure that this is set to synchronised for example.
Check if the Vibration Motor is Working
The next thing you’re going to test is the vibration motor in your iPhone.
To do this, go back to the home screen and flip the ring/silent switch on the side of your iPhone back and forth a couple of times just to make sure that the vibration motor is actually working.
You can find this above the volume button if you were never aware of it.
Reset All Settings
So, you’ve tested the iPhones vibrations and it’s still not working, there may be a potential software issue, so the next step is to Reset All Settings.
- Go to Settings
- Go to General
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Reset
- Tap ‘Reset all Settings’
It’s not the end of the world to Reset All Settings. It doesn’t delete any of your actual content such as your pictures and videos, but it does wipe out the settings in the Settings app which can cause little minor software problems on your iPhone.
Restore From DFU Mode
The last software step here if Reset All Settings didn’t work is the DFU restore.
A DFU restore is the deepest type of restore you can do with an iPhone and it basically takes every last bit of code off of your iPhone and puts it back on again. Here’s how to do a DFU Restore.
Make sure you have an iCloud or iTunes back up before you begin.
A DFU restore is the last-ditch effort for any Apple tech if they’re trying to solve a software related problem. Here’s how to back up your iPhone.
Get the Vibration Motor Repaired
After you’ve done a DFU restore, if your iPhone still isn’t vibrating, you have a hardware problem and it’s time to get it repaired.
When an iPhone doesn’t vibrate, there’s a chance that the vibration motor is broken inside.
