Instagram Stories Not Showing? 12 Reasons Why

Instagram Stories Not Showing

You may not be able to see any stories at all on your page due to some bugs or your internet connection being down. You might not be able to see your own story because you added a music sticker or the Wi-Fi will not let you upload it.

Other people’s stories might not be appearing, either, because they have blocked you or only allowed their Close Friends to view it.

There are a lot of different reasons as to why you can not see anyone’s stories, or more specific accounts. With all these reasons, however, there are also a lot of solutions.

Why Are Instagram Stories Not Showing

1. You’ve Changed your Date and Time Recently

Maybe you just got a new phone, moved to a new location, or changed your time to get some more lives on a new game you can not seem to stop playing.

Regardless of your reason, changing your date and time will mess with a couple of different aspects of your phone.

Due to this change, Instagram may not be displaying stories on your feed because your phone is thinking it is either later or earlier in time than it actually is.

Since Instagram’s stories only stay posted for 24 hours, if you have changed your phone settings, there will be nothing to see because of this feature.

2. Instagram Server Down

Instagram itself may be to blame as the server might also be down which can be the cause of your problems. You can check to see if this is the case by going to DownDetector.com.

Once you have accessed the website, you will be met with a search bar. Type Instagram into said bar and click the magnifying glass to check.

You will then either see if there are problems being reported with Instagram’s servers and that can help explain your inability to see any of the people you follow stories, or you will see a message saying there are no current problems with Instagram’s servers so this is not the technological fault you are dealing with.

3. You Have A Weak Internet Connection

If you keep trying to see stories on Instagram and you keep refreshing your feed in hopes of seeing what your friends are trying to share, your internet connection may be to blame.

It is incredibly common and normal for your Wi-Fi to go offline every once and a while, so do not stress about it.

There are quite a few ways to try and get it back up and starting, or you may not even be connected.

Additionally, if you are not using your internet and are instead using your cellular data, your data may also be the thing malfunctioning. Sometimes a quick reset is all your connection may need to get back up and running.

4. You’ve Watched All The Available Stories

Another reason you are struggling to see any stories is that you have already watched them all. When you are looking at stories at the top of your feed. Any that you have already watched will be gray around the accounts profile picture.

If you have yet to watch a story, there will be a reddish, pinkish, yellowish, purplish circle around the accounts profile picture. If you only see the gray circles and none of the colored ones, this is because there are no new stories for you to view.

Additionally, there may be a green circle around their pictures which means you are on their Close Friends list. Again, the green will only appear if you have yet to see their story and gray if you have already watched it.

Why Can’t I See Someone’s Instagram Story

1. They’ve Blocked You From Seeing Their Story in Settings

If someone’s story is not showing, you may also have been blocked by this user, but only on a story level. You can still view their profile and you still follow each other, but there is a possibility that just their story has been blocked from you.

There are a lot of different ways that you can find out if this has happened to your account. You can also see their story, even if you are blocked from it, through a variety of different websites and apps.

This is different from the Close Friends feature as you have been blocked from seeing their story that they post for all of their followers to see.

2. They Deleted Their Story

When clicking on someone’s stories, you might get a message saying “This Story is Unavailable”, but it keeps popping up with a colorful circle around it on your feed. This happens when the account has deleted their story. You will not be able to view it

3. Their Story Has Expired After the 24 hours

Remember, stories only remain viewable for 24 hours. Once the day is up, they disappear from being directly viewable on the top of your feed.

However, if you really want to rewatch someones or you feel like you did not fully get to see a story, you still may be able to watch it if that user has Highlighted it onto their profiles. The highlights feature allows people to keep their stories longer than 24 hours.

To do this. go to their account and you will see the story circle below their bio. They are sorted based on which ones have had a story added the most recently. Those on the left have been added to more recently.

You can tap through all of their Highlights to see all of the stories they have highlighted and rewatch stories after twenty four hours.

4. The Story Is In Their Close Friends Section Meaning Only People In Their Close Friends List Can See It

If someone has posted a story to their Close Friends list and you are not on it, you will not be able to see that story. There is no way to check and see if you are on someone’s Close Friends list or not, sadly.

If you want a friend to add you, they can do so very easily and quickly so that you can view the stories that they add to this section.

Why Can’t I See My Instagram Story

1. You’ve Used The Music Sticker Which Has Been Known to Cause Bugs

If you have added a music sticker to your story, you may be struggling to see it along with all of your followers. There is a known bug in the system with Instagram music that sometimes messes with the ability to view stories featuring a music sticker.

This is especially common if you are using a business account, but still can happen to any sort of profile.

Music stickers are fun to add to stories as they add an audio element and can help you personalize your story even more than before. Just be aware that there is the potential for this bug to occur if you decide to use the music sticker feature.

2. 24 Hours is Up so Your Story Has Expired

If you posted your story over a day ago, you will no longer be able to see it. With stories, they only appear for 24 hours and then they are no longer viewable.

However, you can Highlight stories which places them on your profile and see you, and all of your followers can still see it, even after the 24 hour period has passed. To do this:

1. Click on your profile in the bottom right corner.

2. Below Edit Profile, you will see a circle with a plus sign in the middle saying New.

3. Click on this and you will now have access to every story you have ever posted.

4. You can create multiple highlights, so maybe if you want to catalog all of the ones of your pets, just choose those and select next.

5. Now, you can pick a picture that is one of your stories or even just from your camera roll and include a name.

6. Click Add once you are done in the top right corner.

Your Highlight will be featured right below your bio and anyone who can access your profile can watch these.

Also, you can add as many highlights as you want, so feel free to keep making more.

3. Instagram Is Down So Your Story Isn’t Uploading

There may be a bug or the server might not be functioning properly, so Instagram is not behaving as it should.

If you posted your story, but nothing is happening when you tap on your profile picture, it may be in the process of uploading but can not fully do so because of this bug or server issue. When this happens, you typically just have to wait it out.

There is no way for you to resolve the issue on your own. You can look into the cause and potentially alert the app creators of said issues, but those are the limits to how you can help.

4. You Have A Weak Internet Connection

You might not be able to see your own story because your internet is down or there is a bad connection to your own Wi-Fi network.

One simple method to attempt to remedy this issue is by restarting your Wi-Fi router. To do this, you can disconnect and then reconnect to your Wi-Fi on your device, unplug and plug back in your router, or power down and power back up your router.

You can also switch your device to use your own cellular data, courtesy of your personal phone plan, if available when your internet connection is down or just simply not working.

How to Fix Instagram Stories Not Showing

1. Correct Your Date And Time

Changing your device setting back to the correct time and date may also help you see stories again. If you are using an IOS device, you can do this by opening up Settings > From there:

1. Go to General and then scroll down to Date and Time. You will see the Set Automatically option.

2. Click on the toggle so it is turned from gray to green.

This will reset your phone back to the current and correct date and time. Additionally, you can see the Time Zone your device has placed you in right below this toggle to double check it has been restored to the correct settings.

If you are using an Android device:

1. Open up Settings.

2. Now, scroll down until you see Date and Time.

3. Tap on Automatic and double check to make sure your device placed you back into the correct time zone based on your location.

Changing your device back to these automatic settings will allow you to hopefully see Instagram stories once again.

2. Use Storysaver.net to Check Their Stories

If you are worried that the reason you can not view a story is that a user has blocked you from their story, one website you can use is StorySaver.net. Once you are there, type in the username of the account you think has blocked you. Then, click download.

You will now see their account and any active stories that person may have posted. If it says zero, they may not have blocked you from their story and they just do not have one up at the moment.

You can also view their highlights and see if you never seen any of their stories featured here. If there are multiple stories in these Highlights that you never saw, you still might be blocked from their stories.

However, when you searched their account and they did have an active story, but you could not see it on the app, you have been blocked from their story.

3. Wait For Instagram Servers to Resolve

If you went to DownDetector.com and learned that the Instagram server is actually down and no longer working, the only way to solve this is to wait for the server to come back online.

This problem is on Instagram’s end which means there is nothing you can personally fx to solve your posting problems. The only solution available to you is to wait until workers are able to get the server functioning and online again.

However, in the meantime, you can keep checking DownDetector.com and refreshing Instagram’s status so that way you can react as soon as the server is back up and see your friends’ stories for the limited time they are available to you.

4. Remove the Music Sticker and ReUpload the Story

Since the music sticker does have such a nasty little bug that appears with its use a lot, deleting said sticker from your post and reuploading your story may help it become viewable again.

5. Fix Internet Connection

A bad internet connection may also be the cause of your problems with Instagram. By locating your Wi-Fi router and restarting it, this will improve a faulty internet.

To restart it, you can either simply unplug it from the plug in for a couple of minutes then plug it back in, or locate the power button on the router itself and turn it off for a while before turning it back on.

Your Wi-Fi connection or cellular data may also be inhibiting you from uploading your video. One change may be to switch to your cellular data if you are currently connected to Wi-Fi, or vice versa. Once you have changed to either Wi-Fi or data, try again to upload your video.

6. Ask Them If It’s In Their Close Friends List

If your friend says to go watch their story, and you go to check, but nothing is showing up, ask your friend if they posted it onto their Close Friends list. If they did, you would have to be selected to view these stories.

When you ask and your friend says yes, you can ask them to add you to the Close Friends list.

They can easily do this by going to their profile in the bottom right part of the screen. Now, they can click on the three lines at the top right corner of the screen.

From the drop down menu, tell them to pick Close Friends. They can now search for you in the search bar.

Once they have found your account, they just need to tap the clear circle across from your name.

The circle will then become blue with a check mark and you are now added to their Close Friends list so you can see the stories posted there.

7. Restart The App

First, try to simply restart the app. To do so, clear the app out of the history of the device that you are using and then just reopen it.

This will help refresh and reboot the system, which could potentially allow you to eventually share your story to Instagram even when you were running into some problems.

8. Log In And Out

A very quick and possible fx is to simply log out of Instagram and then log right back in. This can help let the app refresh and regroup, potentially allowing you to beat your problems and upload your video.

To log out, you just click on your profile in the lower right corner, click on the three lines in the upper right corner, select settings, and then scroll down to press log out.

Will you then just need to log back in this will hopefully solve your uploading problems. If you do not

remember your password, do not fear. Once you log out, you can easily send a password reset link to the email associated with your account and gain access right back in.

9. Update the App

One reason you might be struggling to show you the stories that you or your friends have posted on Instagram is that there is a bug in the software.

With almost a billion users across the globe, there are going to be problems occurring such as bugs and other software setbacks.

These are sadly just a reality for social media apps of all kinds. These types of problems can be very frustrating when you are trying to get something done in an efficient manner, but bugs are sometimes just unavoidable.

No app is immune to the problems that bugs bring on to workers and users alike. However, you can try and overcome this bug by simply updating your app.

To do this, all you have to do is go to the app store on the device you are using and find the update section. If Instagram has fixed this bug through an update, you will see the app waiting in the update section and just download the update. This way Instagram is no longer outdated and you can get to seeing stories once again.

Stories are a really fun feature that Instagram has to offer. Anytime you are struggling to see any, your own, or even specifc accounts, keep these quick solutions handy so you can get back to viewing your friend’s posts.
