How to Tell If Someone Reports You on Instagram

Are you scrolling away on Instagram and see that someone posted a photo with some hate speech in the caption? Or maybe some young kids are bullying a peer in their Instagram comments?

Whatever the case is, if you see a violation happening, you should report it. When reporting something, you are letting Instagram know that there is a violation occurring and they need to either remove this content, or maybe even the account sharing the content.

Also, if you are worried your information will be given to the account you are reporting, do not fret. In most instances, you will stay anonymous when reporting.

What Happens When You Report Someone on Instagram?

When you report someone on Instagram, you are essentially sending a message to Instagram that this comment, post, message, or story goes against Instagram’s guidelines. Once you have reported this content, a couple of different things can happen. If nothing was violated, nothing will happen.

If there was a violation, there could either be just a warning given to the account and their violation taken down, their account could be suspended and have their violation taken down, or there is also the possibility that their entire account could be deleted.

How Many Reports to Delete Instagram Account

There is no magic number to how many times an account needs to get reported before Instagram decides to delete the account. Instagram will take into question what wrongs an account has committed and how serious their wrongs are.

If someone is being reported for the first time, their account might get taken down after this first reporting because Instagram sees ft that their violations were very harmful to this online community and they no longer need to be using the app for any purpose.

However, an account could also be reported over twenty times, and nothing happens. The account just gets the violations taken down, and maybe their account gets suspended for a little while, but their account is still on Instagram.

There are more harmful violations than others, which is why there is no measure of how many reports are needed to take down an account. The account that received twenty reports may have gotten them because they spammed Instagram with too many photos in a short period of time.

This violation really does not do any harm to anyone, it just simply overloads the system and creates annoyances for other users.

On the other hand, an account may post something incredibly racist or maybe Anti-Semetic, which leads to their account being taken down after the first report because these violations do harm the Instagram community.

If You Report Someone on Instagram, Will They Know?

The answer to this is yes and no. Almost all reports you make will be anonymous. If someone is harassing or bullying another account, spreading hate speech, posting anything that attacks someone for who they are, spreading false information, spamming Instagram, posting nude or other sexual content, or essentially any other violation, your information will stay hidden and the account you reported will not know it was you who reported them.

However, if you are reporting someone for intellectual property infringement, this means that this account is using your property right illegally or you know they are using another’s property rights illegally. Since these accusations are a case of legal rights, the account will know who reported them.

If You Report Someone on Instagram Will Their Account Be Deleted

If you do decide to report someone on Instagram, there is a chance that their account will get deleted, but it is not a guarantee. What will most likely happen is that the account you report will get a notice of someone reporting their actions.

This account will also be able to see what gets reported on their account and what violation they have committed. Remember, they will not see that you reported them unless it was for an intellectual property infringement violation.

Following their notice of the report, their account might go on a suspension for a few days while Instagram investigates what is happening. Following their investigation, the account will then either be deleted or will continue to operate on Instagram with just a warning and whatever content was reported may be removed if Instagram believes the material is in fact a violation.

You can check to see what happens to the accounts that you reported by:

1. Opening up Instagram and going to your profile in the bottom right corner.

2. Now, tap on the three lines in the top right corner of your profile.

3. Once there, click on Settings and then tap on Help.

4. You will now see Support Requests, click on that. Go to Reports and you will be able to see the status of any reports you have made with your account.

Does Mass Reporting Work on Instagram

A lot of times, if there is an account that is really irking far too many people in the wrong way and they are posting content that is sickening and needs to be taken down as soon as possible, people you follow might be posting on their Instagram and their story to go and report specific accounts that are doing these things.

You may see one of your friends telling everyone to go report an account that is pretending to be them. This is considered to be mass reporting when a lot of accounts go and report a violation at the same time. This creates the question, does mass reporting work?

Mass reporting might get Instagram to view the violation faster after so many reports come in for one account, but mass reporting will not guarantee that an account gets deleted because the number of reports does not play into Instagram’s decision to take down an account or not.

If You Report a Story on Instagram Will it Get Deleted?

There is a chance that the story will get deleted soon after you report it, but there is no guarantee that it will be deleted within the twenty four hours it is up.

Again, since Instagram has to go in and do a full investigation into what has been posted, stories may often go more ignored than posts because there are only twenty-four hours for it to be seen.

If the account puts the reported story into a highlight on their profile, there is more of a chance the story will be taken from the highlight section as it is now viewable forever.

Also, if people are sharing a post onto their story or a trending picture where a lot of accounts are putting it onto their stories, there may be some action taken by Instagram where they place a warning on the story saying something like “Graphic Content Tap to See”.

In these cases, Instagram finds the content to follow their guidelines but understands that users might want a warning before they see a post that may be questionable.

How Do You report a Story on Instagram

If you are watching a story and notice that it is breaking Instagram’s guidelines, it is very easy to report the story.

When you are viewing the story, you will see a large X in the top right corner of your screen to exit from the story.

1. Right next to that X is three little dots.

2. Click on those and then tap on Report on top in red writing.

3. Once you click report, you will be given a list of reasons why you want to report the story. Select whichever one you think properly fits the violation the story has committed.

Once you select one, you will have reported the story and Instagram will take it from there. Also, if you already went past the story and realized there was one that should have been reported, you can just search from the user and then click on their profile picture.

Any stories they currently have up will play and you can report the story that commits a violation.

If you forgot which account posted the story, just click through the ones at the top of your feed again and you will come across the story again. Once you see it, you can report it.

What Happens When You Get Reported on Instagram?

When you get reported on Instagram, you will first get a notice of the report and what guidelines you violated. You will also see what post, comment, story, or other pieces of material was reported and when.

If you committed an intellectual property infringement, you will also be able to see who reported you. But, if you broke any of the other guidelines, you will not be able to see who reported you. From there, your account can go in a variety of ways. If Instagram believes you did nothing wrong, nothing will happen.

If you did commit the violation, Instagram might only remove the material you posted that was against the guidelines.

Your account might also get suspended, meaning you cannot use it for a little while, but your account still exists and you can use it after your suspension is up. Or, there is also a possibility Instagram will completely remove your account from the app and your account will be deleted because of your violation.

Can You See Who Reported You on Instagram?

Once again, you will not be able to see who reported you unless you commit an intellectual property infringement. Otherwise, you will not be able to see who reported you regardless of the outcome of the report.

You can only see intellectual property infringement report information because this is a civil matter and it is illegal. Knowing what company or whose rights who have been illegally posting is needed information so you know what you stole. Other than that, all reports are anonymous.

Are Instagram Reports Anonymous?

Not all Instagram reports are anonymous, but most are.

How to Know If Someone Reported You on Instagram

1. They’ve Complained to You About The Story, Post or Message

One easy way to figure out if someone has been reporting your account, posts, or stories is through them telling you, quite often, about your posts in a complaining way. This can cue you into the fact that they are not enjoying the content you have posted.

While you might not have posted anything that went against any of Instagram’s violations, you can still be reported. If you did not do anything wrong, their complaining of your posts, stories, or messages may be the only way you are semi-alerted so your content gets reported because nothing will happen to your story, posts, or messages if you have not done anything wrong.

2. They’ve Told You They’ve Reported It

Another very simple way to learn if someone reported your stories, posts, or messages is if they have told you. This is the only way you will be able to learn who reported you, unless you were reported for an intellectual property infringement.

You may also hear it from a friend of a friend that a certain account is responsible for your stories, posts, and messages being reported.

If you can locate the individual who is reporting you and you are doing nothing wrong, you can kindly ask them to stop reporting your appropriate posts, stories, and messages.

If they will not, you can get some revenge and start reporting them back. However, this revenge is exactly why Instagram chooses to keep any reports anonymous unless they legally have to inform you of who reported you.

3. Instagram Has Given You a Violation Warning

One way you will for sure learn that your posts, stories, or messages are getting reported is through a warning from Instagram. Once your account is reported, Instagram will begin an investigation into your content.

If you have been found guilty of breaking the app’s guidelines, you will get a violation warning saying ‘your account may be deleted‘, or maybe your account taken down, of what from your posts, stories, and/or messages got reported and what violation you committed.

This warning will only tell you this information, and not who reported you. Whatever you shared, whether it be a message, post, and/or story will also be taken down as it was a violation of Instagram’s guidelines.

How to Report an Instagram Account and Get it Deleted

There is not a way for you to for sure get an account deleted, but you can try and get them suspended by continuously reporting their actions if they are committing violations.

While there is no magic number to report, if an account is continuously posting content that does break Instagram’s guidelines, Instagram will eventually take the account down because they are not listening to the warnings being given to them by the app.

To report them, all you have to do is:

1. Search for their account.

2. Once you have their account pulled up, tap on the three dots in the top right corner.

3. The third option will be Report and you will then have to select the reason as to why you are reporting their account.

4. Once you fnd the reason that best answers your reasons for reporting, tap on that and you will have reported their account.

5. Then, Again, there is no way to guarantee you can get an account deleted, but you could also block them if you no longer want to see their content.

Keep in mind, once you block someone, you can no longer see their posts, messages, or stories, so you will no longer be able to report them either.

To block them, all you have to do is:

1. Search for their account.

2. Once you have their account pulled up, tap on the three dots in the top right corner.

3. Then, the second option will say Block.

4. Select Block and then you can pick to either block this singular account or any account they may create in the future.

I Accidentally Reported Someone on Instagram

If you accidentally reported someone on Instagram, do not worry. Accounts will be alerted when their profile has been reported, but in many instances, they are just altered and can keep on using Instagram.

Once Instagram looks into your report and realizes there is no violation, the account you reported will be fine and nothing will happen since it was a mistake. However, if you are really worried this account might get penalized for you accidentally reporting them, you can email [email protected].

Once you start your email, include the reference number of your report. This can be found by going to your profle in the bottom right corner on the Instagram app. Now, tap on the

three lines in the top right corner of your profle. Once there, click on Settings and then tap on Help. You will now see Support Requests, click on that. Go to Reports and you will see the reference number you need.

Email this to the account above and they will nullify the report. Additionally, if Instagram has already completed their investigation to the account, your email will alert them to delete the report you had on their account from their history of reports.

Report Instagram Account to Police

If Instagram is not taking your reports seriously and you are genuinely worried about the wellbeing of someone or multiple people, you can take your reports a step further and go to the police.

The only times you will be able to do this and the police can actually do something is if an account has made a threat, or posted something illegal including stealing property right or posting nude photos of people underage or without consent.

If this is the case, you will need to bring proof of their posting into your local police department. Try to print off the content if you can and not just use your phone as the police will need the proof in their hands to be able to do anything.

This has especially been seen in today’s world with the increase in school shootings. There has been a concerning amount of shooters who have shared their posts on social media. These posts should be taken incredibly seriously and reported to the police immediately to try and avoid any further tragedies from happening.

Conclusion

Violation happens far too frequently on Instagram, but thankfully it is very easy to report and get removed. Always be willing to report something, even if it seems minor or not a very serious allegation. You could potentially be saving a life. Also, never take it too personally when you get reported.

Other users might just be looking out and reporting anything questionable to keep everyone safe and happy on the app. Remember, unless you are reporting an intellectual property crime, your identity will remain safe and you will be helping better the Instagram community.
