How to Talk Over A Sound on TikTok

One of the popular video edits that content creators like to do is to talk over the original sound of a video. Talking over a sound means speaking over the original sound in a video. And you can either do this by retaining the original sound while you talk over it, or totally replacing the original sound with yours.

As a content creator, you may want to do this to explain, narrate, debate, or achieve some other goal in relation to the video whose sound you are talking over. And because of the importance of this feature, many users are looking to know whether the ability to talk over a sound is available on TikTok.

In this article, we are going to answers all the questions you may have around talking over a sound on TikTok, as well as provide solutions that may arise when you try to use the feature.

Can You Talk Over a Sound on TikTok?

Yes, you can talk over a sound on TikTok. The feature was introduced back in 2020 and has only got better since then. Now, there are different ways in which you can talk over a sound on TikTok, depending on what you want to achieve with the video you are creating.

You can either use the voiceover feature when editing the video, or you can use the mic feature if you are making a duet of the video. We will explain all of these in details.

The important thing to note is that you cannot only talk over a sound on TikTok but also use different methods to do it depending on what you are trying to do with the video.

How To Talk Over A Sound on TikTok

As we explained above, there are two ways to talk over a sound on TikTok. Here, we explain each of them in detail.

1. Using Voiceover – Voiceover is the simplest and most straightforward way to talk over a TikTok sound.

With voiceover, you simply need to record the video or upload it from your phone storage, select the voiceover option and start speaking over the original sound of the video on TikTok.

The great thing about using voiceover is that you can choose to either keep or discard the original video sound. Here’s how to use voiceover to talk over a sound on TikTok:

1. Launch the TikTok app on your phone and make sure that you are signed into your TikTok account

2. Press the + button at the centre bottom of the screen to open the video creation window

3. Here, you can press the record button at the centre bottom of the screen to start recording a new video with sound

4. Or, you can tap upload next to the record button to upload a video from your phone storage

5. Whichever you choose, tap on the checkmark when done to go to the next editing stage

Here, you will see a list of options to the right of the screen. At this stage, there are a couple of things you can do.

If you want to retain the original sound of the video in addition to your voiceover, follow the steps below:

1. Click on the arrow at the bottom of the editing options to expand it and then tap on Volume

2. Slide the volume on Original Sound to a low figure, say 20 and tap on done

3. Back on the editing window, tap on Voiceover (with the mic icon)

4. Tap on the record button to start talking to create the new sound over the original

5. Make sure that Keep Original Sound at the bottom left of the screen is checked

6. Then, tap on Save at the top right of the screen to save the voiceover

7. Click on Next to make any adjustments you may want to privacy settings, hashtags, video cover, permissions, and so on.

8. Then you can tap Draft to save the video as a draft, or tap Post to post the video right away

On the other hand, if you do not want to keep the original sound of the video but want to replace it with the new sound you are making, follow the steps below:

1. At the editing options after recording or uploading the video, just click on Voiceover right away

2. Tap on the record button to start talking to create the new sound over the original

3. Make sure that Keep Original Sound at the bottom left of the screen is unchecked this time

4. Then, tap on Save at the top right of the screen to save the voiceover

5. Click on Next to make any adjustments you may want to privacy settings, hashtags, video cover, permissions, and so on.

6. Then you can tap Draft to save the video as a draft, or tap Post to post the video right away

The description above applies to creating a TikTok video by either recording one or uploading from your phone storage. But what if you want to talk over a sound on a duet video? The steps for this is a bit different, and we will explain how to do it in the next section below.

How to Talk Over A Sound on TikTok Without Voiceover

If you are creating a duet video, you may not find the voiceover option when editing the video. Instead, you may find a mic button to allow you talk over the video. It is pretty much the same thing. Let’s take a look.

1. Launch TikTok on your phone and make sure that you are signed into your TikTok account

2. When you find the video that you want to duet, click on the arrow button at the bottom right of the screen

3. From the options that appear, tap on Duet and give TikTok a few seconds to process the video

4. When the duet page opens, click on the Mic icon on the right, among the editing options

5. Then tap on the record button to start speaking over the sound (use an earpiece for better recording experience)

6. Then, click on the checkmark to go to the next page when you are done

7. Here, you will still see the Voiceover and Volume buttons but they do not work the way recording your own video works.

8. If you click on the volume button and turn the Original Sound down, you are turning down the sound that you added in the previous step using the Mic button. The original sound of the video you are duetting remains in place

9. If you tap on Voiceover, you get to record yet another sound over the sound of the original video, and the sound you added using the Mic button in the previous window.

And you do not get to choose whether you want to retain the original sound or not. The reason TikTok does this is because they want to prevent intellectual property theft.

So, you should be okay with using just the Mic button in the previous window, speaking over the original sound, and then either saving or posting the final duet edit.

Why Can’t I Talk Over a Sound on TikTok

Talking over a sound on TikTok, whether you are working on your own video or duetting a video is quite simple. The steps for each are only slightly different.

If you follow the detailed steps provided above, you should have no problems talking over a TikTok video sound. However, some users report that they still have issues with the feature even after following the steps provided above.

If that’s the case with you, then read on to find comprehensive solutions for the challenge.

1. You Haven’t Clicked Mic Button to Enable Your Mic

Talking over a sound when recording or uploading a video on TikTok is different from when duetting a video. When you record or upload, you will see the voiceover option right on the editing screen where you can then talk over the video’s sound.

But if you are duetting, you will not see voiceover on the first editing screen. Instead, you will see a Mic icon among the editing options. You need to tap on that icon to start talking over the duet video. Also, if you do not use an earpiece, your audio will be barely audible.

It is only when you finish talking using the Mic button and then click on Next, that you will see the voiceover button on the next window. But this feature is essentially of no use for the purpose of a duet video.

Fix – Click on the Mic Button When You Go to Duet the Video

So, when you want to talk over a duet video, use the Mic button instead as explained below:

1. Launch TikTok on your phone and make sure that you are signed into your TikTok account

2. When you find the video that you want to duet, click on the arrow button at the bottom right of the screen

3. From the options that appear, tap on Duet and give TikTok a few seconds to process the video

4. When the duet page opens, click on the Mic icon on the right, in the editing options

5. Then tap on the record button to start speaking over the sound

2. Your Mic Permissions Aren’t Enabled for TikTok

Apart from your phone’s native camera, every application on your phone that creates or records media requires permission to access your phone microphone and camera.

When you want to record a video on TikTok for the first time, TikTok will request for permission to access your phone camera, microphone and storage.

If you do not grant these permissions, you will not be able to record video and sound on TikTok.

Or, you may have granted camera and storage permissions but denied microphone permissions. In that case, you may be able to record and upload videos but will not be able to use the voiceover and microphone features to talk over a sound on TikTok.

So, if you have clicked on the Mic or Voiceover option and are still unable to talk over a TikTok sound, then you need to head over to your phone permissions and enable microphone access for TikTok

Fix – Enable Mic Permissions

The method to enable mic permissions differs with phone OS.

To enable mic permission for TikTok on Android OS:

1. Exit TikTok and swipe it away from recent items

2. Open the Settings app on your phone

3. Go to Privacy Settings or App Permissions, depending on your phone’s user interface

4. You may see Microphone straight away or you may have to tap on Permission Manager, then tap on Microphone

5. Scroll down to find TikTok, then tap on it to allow microphone permissions for TikTok

6. Now, relaunch TikTok and retry talking over the sound to see if the issue is resolved

To enable mic permission for TikTok on iOS:

1. Exit TikTok and swipe it away from recent items

2. Open the Settings app on your phone

3. Scroll all the way down in Settings until you find TikTok, tap on it

4. You will immediately see permissions for TikTok.

5. At Microphone, toggle to turn on microphone access for TikTok

3. There’s A Bug

If you have enabled mic permissions for TikTok and are still unable to talk over a sound, then it is likely that there’s a bug on your TikTok app. But not to worry, we have provided fixes below:

Fix – Restart the App

Issues with talking over a sound on TikTok are usually not a result of a serious bug on the app. There is no need to uninstall the app or try some other drastic solution. Most times, a simple restart of the app resolves the problem and allows you to start talking over video sounds on the app.

To restart TikTok:

1. Exit TikTok and swipe it away from recent items in the background

2. Wait 30 seconds, then relaunch TikTok and retry.

What restarting the app does is to offload all the background data that may have become corrupt or did not load properly in your current use. When you relaunch TikTok, all the background programmes and their permissions are reloaded and this usually fixes the issue.

Fix 2 – Clear the Cache

The background data that we talked about in the step above, are stored in a memory on the phone called Cache.

Each application installed on your phone is assigned a cache memory to store background data and your usage data so that you are able to access the app quicker.

The cache also ensures that you do not need to repeat actions like logging in and setting preferences every time you launch the app.

Sometimes, the cache memory may become full or corrupt, and make you unable to perform certain actions like talking over a sound on TikTok. To fix this, you need to clear the app cache using the steps below:

First, you need to clear the cache on the TikTok app directly:

1. Open TikTok

2. Tap the Profile tab at the bottom right of the screen

3. Tap the three-line menu icon at the top right

4. Select Settings and Privacy from the option

5. Under Cache and Cellular Data, select Free Up Space

6. Beside Cache, select Clear and confirm the action

However, this will not perform a complete clearing of the cache. To complete the cache clearing, you also need to clear the TikTok app cache from your phone settings. To do this:

First, exit TikTok and swipe it away from recent items. Then,

On Android

1. Long-press the TikTok app

2. Select App Info

3. Select Clear Data

4. Select Clear Cache

On iOS

1. Navigate to Settings on your device

2. Select General

3. Select iPhone Storage

4. Select TikTok

5. Select Offload app

6. Confirm the action

7. Select Reinstall app

Fix 3 – Restart Your Phone

If restarting TikTok and clearing the TikTok app cache do not resolve the issue for you, you may need to restart your phone. Restarting the phone is the ultimate solution that will clear glitches both on the app and on the phone itself, which may be causing you to be unable to talk over a sound on TikTok.

To restart your phone to clear such serious glitches, we recommend a hard restart using the steps below:

To hard restart an Android phone:

1. Press and hold the power button until the power menu appears

2. Tap on shutdown to completely turn off the phone

3. Press and hold the power button again to reboot the phone

To force restart iPhone with Face ID, iPhone 8, and iPhone SE Gen 2 and later:

1. Press and quickly release the volume up (+) button

2. Then press and quickly release the volume down (-) button

3. Then, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears

Please do these in quick succession or the sequence will break.

To force restart iPhone 7

1. Press and hold the volume down button and the Sleep/Wake button simultaneously

2. Hold until the Apple logo appears, then release them

To force restart iPhone 6s and iPhone SE Gen 1

1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button simultaneously

2. Hold until the Apple logo appears, then release them

After restarting, you should now be able to talk over sounds on TikTok.
