Google Play Music is a streaming service that gives users access to millions of songs. It’s not as well- known, but they have quite a bit of dedicated users for a reason. When you pay for this streaming service, it’s worth it because it includes YouTube Premium and the ability to save YouTube videos on your phone for when you have no internet. You also have a huge storage to store your music library.

If you have Amazon devices that you want to hook up to your Google streaming service, you can do this even though they are rivals. If you’re willing to take the time, you can get Alexa and your Amazon Echo to play the music in your Google library.

Using Bluetooth Function on your Amazon Echo

You can use your Amazon Echo’s built in Bluetooth function to connect your phone or computer to it. Once you do this, you can play the music on your device and it will play through your Amazon Echo. Here’s how you do it.

1. On your phone, open the settings of your phone. For iOS, the Settings menu is found on your home screen; for Android, can look for the gear icon on your home screen or you can pull down the notification panel and tap on the gear in the corner of it to open settings.

2. Inside your settings, you’ll want to look for the Bluetooth section in the settings. First you have to tap on “Connections.” On iOS and Android, it’s at the top of your settings menu. You may have a different set-up depending on the Android that you have, but generally click on a section that is related to your wireless connections.

3. Once you get inside the Bluetooth section in your phone, make sure your Bluetooth is enabled on your device. In the “Connection” section, you’ll see “Bluetooth” located partway down the screen. There is a switch next to it that you need to tap into the “on” position. You should see an icon appear at the top of your screen when you do this and it’s on.

4. Once your Bluetooth is on, ask your Echo to start the pairing process by saying “Alexa, Pair.” The name will depend on the kind of Echo you own since there’s the traditional Echo, the Spot, the Tap, etc.

5. On your phone, you’ll need to tap on the name of your Amazon device so that you can pair the two devices together. Alexa will tell you that your device has been paired, and you should see on your phone that you have one device connected to it.

After this, you can use your phone to play music right from your phone to the Amazon Echo, but you won’t be able to use Alexa to play specific songs. You can, however, use your voice for commands, like next, previous, pause, and play. Also, any device that supports Bluetooth you can connect to your Amazon Echo to play any kind of media that you want.

You can listen to videos or podcasts or the news on your Echo so long as it’s paired by Bluetooth. If you’re using a laptop, you should download the Google Play Music Desktop Player so that you can have easy media controls.

Transferring Your Library

If you’re going to play most of your music from your Amazon Echo, you might want to think about moving your music to Amazon. Amazon, although this might not be well- known, does offer a relatively cheap streaming service that offers most of the music that you might want to listen to on your device. Amazon Music has an app that you can find on both iOS and Android, so if you want a new service to use on the go that works with your Echo, you can use it.

If you’re going to do this, you need to remember that you are going to lose a few of the features that come with Google Play Music, such as YouTube Premium and the lack of ads on YouTube. If you’re someone who can live without these features then it may be beneficial for you to switch.

STAMP

If you want to switch, then it can seem like moving playlists and albums from one service to another is a daunting task. There’s only one service that syncs with both Google and Amazon so that you can sync your music automatically, and it’s called STAMP. STAMP makes it so that you to move your music to different streaming services using your phone or computer.

This sounds awesome, but, or course, you’ll have to pay $10 for the desktop app or the mobile app so that you can move all your music. You can try it for free, but you’ll only be able to move a little bit of songs this way. The reviews are better for the mobile app, so if this is something that you want to try, then use the mobile app.

If that doesn’t sound like something you want to do, then you can always move over your whole collection manually. This takes a lot of time since you have to scroll through all the artists and songs that you had on one service and go add them on the second service. It’s possible, but it’s time consuming, so the easiest way to use Google Play Music with your Echo is to use Bluetooth. If you tell Alexa to play certain songs, it will play it from Prime.

Solution to Not Having Amazon Storage for your Music Library

You used to be able to upload the songs that you had downloaded to Amazon’s cloud to enable you to access them through your Prime account, which would allow you to hear it on your Echo. Amazon stopped offering this storage, so if anyone was previously using it, they couldn’t access the songs that they uploaded there after a certain date. There are other methods that you can use to get Alexa to play your Google Music Library in a manner that is similar to the way the Amazon cloud worked.

GeeMusic

GeeMusic is designed to connect your Amazon Echo device to Google Music, and it works most of the time. It’s difficult to set up though and even if you’re quite skilled with technology, it’s still a huge hassle. It comes with an in- depth guide on how to set-up if you’re interested and it’s quite popular.

Because it is so complicated, you can go here to hear from the creator how you should set- up, but before you check it out, you should only go if you have knowledge about UNIX environments, Python 3, and online servers, so if you’re confused about what those things are, you might want to forget about GeeMusic. If you’re familiar, then go ahead and check it out.

PLEX

PLEX is a more popular platform to replicate a library of media so that it can be streamed everywhere. It isn’t perfect, but it will work so that you can listen to your music on Amazon Echo. It replicate the old Amazon cloud service pretty well. If you want to use Plex, you’ll have to say “Alexa ask Plex” or “Alexa tell Plex to play…” since it isn’t default. You will have to have a computer to set-up your media server all the time when you want to use it.

If you don’t mind the few limitations that it has, then you’re all set to use it. You should use a secondary computer for this so that you don’t have to keep the one that you usually use running all the time. It can be a cheap on. It just has to be able to run the program. Download your music folder from Google’s music server and refresh PLEX.

You’ll also need to download the PLEX Skill from Amazon so that you can enable it on your Echo. Once you have this skill, tell Alexa to change Plex to your server. Plex voice commands will work for any of the other commands that you would use on Alexa. If you want tips on how to make this process go smoothly for you, you can go to the Plex support page.
