If you’re a Mac user, you’ve probably come across the Mac Dashboard, whether intentionally, or accidentally. The Mac Dashboard, for those of you who don’t know is a screen of its own that offers widgets in order to display things such as the weather, stocks, world clocks, a calculator, and more. You can customize the Mac Dashboard as you see fit. The Mac Dashboard is essentially the same thing as the widgets screen on your iPhone, but just for Mac instead.
Most of you, however, area already very familiar with the Mac Dashboard, as you’ve probably crossed paths with it, whether you like it or not. In other words, it’s quite common for the Mac Dashboard to open up accidentally, when you meant to open something else. The Mac Dashboard can be accessed using your trackpad, a keyboard shortcut, or gesture with your fingers.
These three access methods are used for various different tasks, and it can be quite troublesome to constantly see your Mac Dashboard when you actually meant to do something else. Luckily, you can easily close your Mac Dashboard, or even turn the feature off entirely. In order to get started, and learn how to close, and turn off your Mac Dashboard, follow the instructions below.
How to Close Mac Dashboard
If you often find yourself entering your Mac Dashboard, there’s an easy shortcut you can use in order to exit the Dashboard.
You’re probably familiar with closing Dashboard by pressing the small arrow button in the corner of the Dashboard screen, as seen above. However, there’s another easy way to close the Dashboard. All you need to do is press the fn + F12 key on your keyboard. The fn key is the function key. This is a keyboard shortcut that will close the Mac Dashboard and enter the next screen you have opened.
How to Turn Off Mac Dashboard in Mac OS
If you’d rather completely turn off your Mac Dashboard, this is fairly easy, and only requires you to adjust the settings on your Mac OS. In order to get started, and turn off the Mac Dashboard, follow the instructions below.
1. Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen.
2. From the drop-down menu that appears, click on System Preferences.
3. Click on Mission Control.
4. Next to the Dashboard label, pull down the drop-down menu and select Off.
When you select the Off option, the Mac Dashboard will no longer be active. Even if you use the keyboard shortcut, fn + F12, the Mac Dashboard will not appear. You have completely disabled the feature. You can always turn Dashboard back on, by following the instructions above and selecting either As Space or As Overlay.
If you select the As Space option, then the Mac Dashboard will appear as a virtual desktop unique Space. If you select the As Overlay option then the Mac Dashboard will hover widgets over the desktop, when it’s activated. Feel free to choose the option that best suits your needs, or as this tutorial described, feel free to keep the Mac Dashboard disabled.
You may find that your Mac Dashboard is already disabled by default. Or perhaps your Mac Dashboard appears as an overlay, even though you never set this option. Whatever setting you encounter on your Mac, depends on your Mac’s system software and the initial settings that were on your Mac when you first purchased the system. If you did a clean install of a modern release on your Mac’s system, then this may also affect the setting you see on your Mac. No matter what setting is set, you can always adjust the setting, by using the instructions above.
