The next methods are methods that you should try if you want to make sure that the user that you are blocking on social media does not find out that they have been blocked.

1. Mute Them

The first option that you will have when it comes to blocking someone on Facebook is to go ahead and mute the user on the social media platform.

Muting is similar to blocking someone on social media, but it is something that might be a bit less restrictive that blocking someone on Facebook.

When you block someone, the other person will not be able to see your profile or interact with any of your posts.

On the other hand, when you mute someone, the restrictions on how the muted person can interact with you are not as strict. When you mute somebody, you are simply limiting how much and how often you see their content displayed on your Facebook feed.

They will still be able to see your posts and your profile as well as interact with these posts on your profile. If you wish to mute someone on Facebook, then go ahead and follow the next steps that will guide you through muting another user on Facebook.

Log into your Facebook account using either your mobile device or desktop browser.

Once you have logged in, go to the profile of the user on Facebook that you wish to mute.

After you have found the profile of the user that you wish to mute and you are on their profile, you will want to click on the Following button if you are using the desktop website or on the More option if you are using the mobile app for Facebook.

If you are on the desktop website, then you will simply unfollow them, and this will serve as a mute function as you will no longer be prompted to “follow” their content and posts.

If you are using the mobile app for Facebook, then when you click on the More option, you will see in those options that you will be able to choose to Unfollow the user, and it will have the same function as muting the user and will limit how many of your posts are shown on your feed.

If you want to unfollow users straight from your news feed, you can do so by clicking on the three-dot menu on the main news feed on any post of that user that you wish to unfollow and choosing the Hide Post option.

You will also have the option to Snooze for 30 Days or to Unfollow the user simply.

2. Use the Ignore Feature

There is also a feature that is specific to Facebook Messenger that can also help you limit how often you are notified of messages received in a certain conversation with someone. This is known as the Ignore feature on Facebook Messenger.

When you go ahead and use the Ignore function on Facebook Messenger, this feature will allow Messenger to not notify you about any future messages in the conversation, similar to the Mute function.

But instead of simply muting the messages and the conversation, when you use the Ignore function, the conversation will move the conversation message thread from your Inbox, where most of your conversations are kept, to the Message Requests box.

If this is a feature that seems like what you are looking for, the next steps will walk you through what you need to do in order to use the Ignore feature on Facebook Messenger.

Start off by opening up the Facebook Messenger app on your mobile device or if you are using your desktop, go to the Messenger section of the Facebook website.

If you are using the Messenger mobile app, then you will want to go ahead and click on the contact name of the person whose conversation you are trying to ignore.

Once you have clicked on the contact name of that user, you will be able to see options on the pop-up screen. These options should display the option to Ignore.

Once you see the option to ignore, go ahead and choose to Ignore the user in the conversation. That conversation should now be moved to the Message Requests folder within Messenger.

If you are using the Messenger function on the Facebook website, the process will be similar. Click on the contact name of the person whose conversation you are trying to ignore.

Once you have clicked on the contact name of that user, you will be able to see options on the pop-up screen. These options should display the option to Ignore.

Confirm that you wish to ignore the conversation, and the message thread will be moved to the Message Requests folder as it did when you used the mobile app.

3. Unfriend Them

If you simply do not want to risk seeing the other user’s content anywhere on your feed, you can ensure that this does not happen by simply making sure that you Unfriend the user.

This will get rid of any potential posts that will pop up on your main news feed on the app or website for Facebook.

This will not limit how much the other user can see your profile, but it does ensure you do not see it unless you actively look for it.

Another thing to keep in mind with Unfriending someone on Facebook is that if you ever want to become friends with them again on the social media platform, then you do need to go ahead and send them a new friend request which will notify them that you have unfriended them in the past.

If this is something that you wish to do and want to go ahead and unfriend someone on Facebook, the next steps will guide you through the process.

Log into your Facebook account using either your mobile device or desktop browser.

Once you have logged in, go to the profile of the user on Facebook that you wish to unfriend.

After you have found the profile of the user that you wish to unfriend and you are on their profile, you will want to click on the Following button if you are using the desktop website or on the More option if you are using the mobile app for Facebook.

If you are on the desktop website, then you will simply unfollow them, and this will serve as an unfriending function as you will no longer be prompted to “follow” their content and posts.

If you are using the mobile app for Facebook, then when you click on the More option, you will see in those options that you will be able to choose to Unfriend the user.

If you want to unfriend users straight from your news feed, you can do so by clicking on the three-dot menu on the main news feed on any post of that user that you wish to unfollow and choosing the Hide Post option.

You will also have the option to Snooze for 30 Days or to Unfollow the user simply.

If You Did Decide to Block Them, What Would They See?

Most of the methods mentioned above, such as muting, ignoring, and hiding notifications from your device and from the apps, will not notify the other users that they have been blocked.

Unfriending them will not notify them as well, but if you do decide to send another friend request, they will know you unfriended them. All in all, when you do block someone on Facebook or Messenger, they will not be able to see that this was done, nor will they be notified.
