If you’re an avid Apple fan, you know September is the golden month, when Apple tends to release not only a new iPhone, but also a new iOS update. While many of us may not be able to get a new iPhone every year, we don’t have to feel left out, thanks to the iOS update we can easily install on our old iPhone models.

It’s expected that the update will focus on AR applications and applications that we use in our daily life. With such a big update coming out, the question arises: How long will it take to update your iPhone? In the past, users have complained that updating their software takes quite some time and it often seems like the device is stuck. This usually isn’t cause for concern, as there are a few things you can do to fix the problem.

While there’s no one answer to how long it will take for you to update your device, there are a range of times you can use to figure out if your device is taking too long to update. Please note that the exact amount of time it will take for your device to update depends on your internet speed, device storage and the model you’re updating. For an average range of times it takes users to download and install iOS 12.4, look at the table below,

Update Process Time
iOS Download 3-10 minutes
iOS Install 10-20 minutes
Set up iOS 1-5 minutes
Total Update Time 30 minutes-1 hour

If you find that your iPhone is taking longer than expected to download and install the new software update, it’s best to be patient for a few minutes, especially if you’ve had your device for a few years, or have used up much of its storage. However, if even after waiting a few extra minutes, you find that the device isn’t updating accordingly, there are a few steps you can carry out to fix the problem. To get started, follow the instructions below,

Force Restart Your Device

If you force restart your iPhone, it will cause a refresh and smooth out problems that may be occurring internally. Also, not to worry, carrying out a force restart won’t delete any of your data. In order to force restart your device, follow the instructions below.

If you’re using an iPhone 8 or above model,

1. Press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, and then lastly, press the Power button until the Apple logo appears.

If you’re using an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus,

2. Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time, until you see the Apple logo.

If you’re using an iPhone 6s/6+/6 or earlier model,

3. Press and hold the Home button and Sleep button until you see the Apple logo appear.

Now try downloading and installing the new iOS software update.

Ensure Your Internet Connection is Working Properly

Often the problem may lie not with your iPhone, but with your internet connection. Before you begin installing a software update, it’s best to ensure that you have a strong internet connection. To get started checking on your connection, follow the instructions below,

1. Open the Settings application on your device. It has a grey background with an icon of a gear on it.

2. Click Wi-Fi. If the toggle button for Wi-Fi is off, turn it on and connect to a network, ideally your Home network, or another network you trust that won’t suddenly stop working.

You also have the option to reset your network settings. This will cause a refresh and may allow your device to work faster. To reset your network settings, follow the instructions below,

1. Open the Settings application on your device. It has a grey background with an icon of a gear on it.

2. Click General.

Click Reset

3. Click Reset.

Click Reset Network Settings

4. Click Reset Network Settings.

After carrying out the above tasks, download and install the new software update.

Ensure that Your iPhone has Sufficient Space

It could be possible that your iPhone doesn’t have enough storage space to support an iOS update. You can solve this problem by freeing up storage on your device. However, first we need to figure out what the majority of your storage is being used for. In order to check how much free space your iPhone has, follow the instructions below,

1. Open the Settings application on your device. It has a grey background with an icon of a gear on it.

2. Click General.

Click iPhone Storage

3. Click iPhone Storage.

Recommendations

You’ll now see how much storage you have available on your device. You will also see Recommendations heading. Under this heading will be recommendations from your device, advising you how to free up storage. There will also be a SHOW ALL tab, that when clicked, will show all the recommendations from your device. Follow the recommendations in order to free up storage on your device.

You can also transfer your photos to your laptop in order to save space on your iPhone. Delete applications that you no longer use, and delete messages from your Messages application that are now old and unnecessary. By cleaning your iPhone of unnecessary items, you’ll have enough storage to properly carry out an iOS update.
