Most people save their photos and videos on the app for use later, and if you’ve had the app for a while, it’ll remind you of little moments from a year or two years ago. Because of the saving feature on Snapchat, it can be really nerve wracking if you get hacked. There are quite a few precautions that you can take to prevent being hacked, but if you’re already hacked, then there are steps that you can take to get your account back.

Snapchat is notorious for getting hacked, and if it happens to you, it can be a real nightmare. All someone has to do if get a hold of your username and password, and they’ll be right in your account. Oftentimes, hackers will send your followers odd messages, which can lead to their accounts being hacked. If you have sensitive media in your account or you use that password with other accounts, it can be stressful dealing with your hacked account.

How to Tell If You’ve Been Hacked

You know your account is hacked when a few different things begin happening. If spam begins being sent from your account, this is a sign that your account was hacked. Spam is usually a link that’s sent to the people in your contact list, and when they open it, it could any number of things, such as racy photos or weird ads.

You might also end up with an alert from Snapchat that was sent to your email, letting you know that someone logged into your account from an unfamiliar location, device, or IP address. This alert would usually come to the email attached to your account. Then, if you see contacts on your friends list that weren’t there before, that’s usually a good indication that someone was in your account.

Another thing to note is that you shouldn’t have to log into your Snapchat account every time you launch the app. You’ll have to log in again if someone is logged into your account somewhere else.

Forgot Password

One of the main ways that you can get your account back is by going to log in and pressing “Forgot Password.” Changing your password is a great way to lock the hacker out of your account. You need to make your password as unique as you can. Make your password long, but make sure that it’s something that you’ll remember.

You should do a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters. You should also exclude any references to your name, birthday, and phone number, since that makes it easier to guess. Also, make sure that this isn’t a password that you use on other accounts.

Change Email and Phone Number

You should also change the email and phone number that’s attached to your account. Changing your phone number might be harder, but if you have a second phone or are willing to change your phone number, that would be great for your account. Since that’s extreme, you should only do that if you notice that you’re regularly getting hacked. Changing your email is a little easier.

Just attached your account to one of your other email addresses by entering your settings and tapping on your email address that’s listed. You can enter a new email and verify it, so it’ll be changed then.

Activate Login Verification

You can also activate login verification on Snapchat to prevent ever getting hacked again. Once you activate this, you’ll receive a code that you’ll need to use to log into your account. This makes it harder for people to enter your account since they’ll need the code that was sent. Here’s how you turn this feature on.

1. Launch the app. When you initially enter the app, you’ll be taken to your camera screen.

2. In the top left corner of your screen is your Bitmoji. Tap on your Bitmoji and you’ll see information about your profile.

3. In the top right corner of the screen is a grey gear. Tap on that icon.

4. When you tap on the gear icon, you’ll be taken to the settings menu. From the settings menu, scroll until you see Two- Factor Authentication. Tap this option.

You’ll be able to choose from a few different options. The SMS verification will have a code send to you in a text that you’ll need to enter before you log in. If you check Authentication App, then you’ll have to download Google Authenticator so that you can approve the log in from that app.

Also, the option to generate a recovery code for you will make it harder to hack into your account since the hacker will need your unique recovery code that was chosen by Snapchat for you if they attempt to log in on a new device.

If all else fails, you can contact Snapchat support. This will allow you to report that your account was hacked. Select that you’re reporting a safety concern and choose that you’ve been hacked. You’ll be able to change your password from here, and if that doesn’t work, Snapchat will be able to grant you access to your account again.
