The Apple AirPods are very small and light so losing them is pretty common and it happens to a lot of people. Hopefully, after reading this, you would have found your AirPods in no time.
The first thing you need to know about finding your AirPods when you’ve lost or misplaced them is that they need to be powered and turned on for any of these methods to work accurately. If they’re turned off or the battery is dead, you might get lucky and find out where they were last powered or used.
But if not, then you’re out of luck and have to rely on finding them the old-fashioned way which is backtracking and hoping you see them with your eyes.
Play Music from Your AirPods and Listen
If you’ve just recently lost them, or one fell out of your ear when you took your shirt off in the changing room at the gym, for example, the easiest way to help you find your AirPods if you can’t see them is to turn the music up and move towards the music.
It doesn’t require any special apps and it works pretty well.
The Play Music method doesn’t always work because you may have lost them far away and you have no access to them because you have no clue where they are.
Use ‘Find My iPhone’ to Find your AirPods
The next best option is to use to the Find My iPhone app on your iPhone. If you’ve already set up Find My iPhone with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch that you’re using with your AirPods, it’s automatically enabled for your AirPods too.
If your AirPods are lost, out of their case, or somewhere close by, using Find My iPhone would be the best option for you. If your AirPods are out of range, all of your devices need to charge or are in the AirPod case, Find My iPhone will still help by showing the time and location where they were last connected.
So, if you haven’t set that feature up for your iPhone already, I strongly recommend doing so. It’s not only helpful to find your iPhone if it’s lost or stolen but also for other Apple devices such as your AirPods.
Here’s how you Find AirPods using Find My iPhone:
- Run the ‘Find My iPhone’ app
- Scroll through your list of devices until you find your AirPods
- Select your AirPods and the app will do its best to find them on a map for you
If your AirPods are still online, then they will show up on the map with a green dot. This means that you can play a sound to locate the AirPods once they’re close. If they’re offline, the map will show the last known location of them with a grey dot.
A grey dot means your AirPods are off, out of battery, in their case, or out of range. If they’re still online, you should also see the AirPods pin icon above the green dot. If you select that pin, it will present you with options to ping your AirPods which will make them emit a tracking sound to help you find them.
Similar to the playing music method, your AirPods play a sound that gets gradually louder for two minutes or until you tell them to stop.
Here’s Emit Sounds from your AirPods:
- Open ‘Find My iPhone’ on your iPhone, iPod, or iCloud
- Tap the AirPods in the list
- Tap ‘Actions’
- Tap ‘Play Sound’
Once you tap this, both AirPods will start making triplicate chirping sounds which will start increasing in volume gradually. If you only lost one AirPod, you can mute the left or right AirPod (the one you didn’t lose) and you can just focus on finding one AirPod you did lose.
You can also use Find My iPhone through iCloud.com if your phone isn’t handy or the battery is almost dead.
- Log into iCloud.com with your Apple ID
- Choose ‘Find iPhone’
iCloud Find My iPhone works a little bit differently. It will present you with the green and grey dots but doesn’t seem to show any icon pins. Once you figure out which dot is your AirPods, you can click the ‘i’ button in the top right to see defined options. The options will be presented in the upper right-hand corner of the map screen.
Buy Replacement AirPods
So what if you lost an AirPod or just can’t find it. Well, if you still have two of the three parts to your AirPods, you’re not totally at luck. You can purchase a replacement AirPod from Apple. They’re only $69 per piece.
Whether you lost just a left AirPod, the right one, or the case, you don’t need to still have the two out of three pieces. Apple will still charge this price regardless of whether your AirPods are under warranty or not. I recommend only going through the replacement procedure if you’re only missing one piece because it’s a better price than buying new ones from scratch. But if you’re missing two pieces or the whole thing, you’re just better off buying new ones.
