FaceTime is the app exclusive to Apple devices that allow you to make calls and videos calls using the internet. You can use you WI-FI or data to make calls on FaceTime and it was one of the first apps that got carriers to improve their call quality by introducing WI-FI Calling. If you have an Android device, you won’t be able to use FaceTime. Alternative apps include WhatsApp and Viber.
A lot of people were impressed by the quality FaceTime was producing by using the internet to make calls, so it made manufactures improve the way devices connected to the internet, so they introduced a feature called WI-FI Calling.
There are plenty of reason why FaceTime would stop working. You may have been using it before and when you go to the app, it’s just not allowing you to make calls. The app may just keep closing after you’ve opened it, or the app just keeps crashing.
The mains reasons why you’re having problems with FaceTime is because of your router and your network. Another reason why you could be having issues with FaceTime is that of the device itself. Your iPhone could have software issues which is stopping FaceTime from working properly.
Use FaceTime Properly
You first you need to know is how to use FaceTime properly before you try and diagnose the issue and start troubleshooting it. Here’s how you use it:
- Launch FaceTime
- Click on the name of the person you want to call
- When you’re in contacts, click on the FaceTime icon below the person’s name
- Tap on the FaceTime
- You can choose whether you want to audio call or video call the person
So, the key thing to bear in mind here is that the recipient needs to have an iPhone and not an Android. If you’re not sure, ask them. Now you know how to use it properly, you can start troubleshooting the app and using the solutions below.
Turn Your Router on and off
The first thing you can do to try and fix this issue is to turn your router on and off again. The biggest reason that’s stopping FaceTime from working is going to be your router. Even if your iPhone is connected to WI-FI, it doesn’t mean that it’s connected to the internet. The only thing that stopping it from connecting to the internet is going to be your router.
The reason the sound quality on FaceTime is so good is that it uses the internet. So, without any internet, the app isn’t going to function properly and if the connection is bad, the calls aren’t going to be of the best quality.
Here’s how you restart your router:
- On the back of your router, locate a small hole labelled ‘reset’
- Look for a small pin like tool
- A toothpick or the end of a safety pin should be fine
- Push and hold the tool into the small hole that says reset for 10 seconds
This is going to reset your router to factory default which is the same state it was in when you first got it. This is going to clear up any software issues that’s messing up your router and stopping it from connecting to the internet.
Resetting it is going to take some time so, make sure you wait at least 5 minutes for your device to connect to the internet again. Once your router has connected to the internet, make sure your device is connected to your router.
Once you’ve checked that your device is connected to your router and not your neighbour’s router, go back to the FaceTime app and see if it’s functioning properly.
Make Sure you’re Signed into your Apple ID
Whenever you use an Apple app such as FaceTime, you’re going to be asked for your Apple ID to use the app. If your device is signed into an Apple ID which is different to the Apple ID you used to sign into FaceTime, it’s not going to work.
This is only going to be an issue if you have two different Apple ID and you’re signed into one for FaceTime and one for your device. If you can’t recall ever having two different Apple IDs, then don’t bother using this step, but if you’re in doubt, make sure you check.
Here how to check if you’re signed into the right Apple ID:
- Go to the Settings app
- Tap on your name at the top
- Remember the email underneath your name
- Go back to the Settings menu
- Scroll down to FaceTime and tap on
- Make sure you toggle on FaceTime
- You’ll know it’s on because it’ll be green
- Under this, you’ll see your Apple ID
Check to see that you’re signed in. If you’re signed in, make sure that the ID you used to register FaceTime is the same Apple ID you used to register your device with. If they’re not the same, tap on the Apple ID highlighted blue then sign out and sign back into the Apple ID that your device Is associated with. Go back to the app and see if it’s working.
