Facebook Messenger Notifications not Working Android

Facebook users are having trouble with notifications. They just don’t want to work sometimes. And Android users aren’t alone in this.

What it boils down to is Facebook and Messenger not playing well with your notifications settings. If your Android has notifications disabled, Facebook won’t notify you, and vice versa. It’s time to change that.

Clear Facebook and Messenger’s App Cache

1. Open the ‘Settings’ app. It’s the GEAR icon.

2. Keep scrolling until you locate ‘Apps.’ Select it.

3. Find the Messenger app and tap it.

4. First, select ‘Force Stop.’

5. Afterwards, head into ‘Storage.’

6. Select ‘Clear Cache.’

Reinstall the Messenger App

At one point or another, the Facebook app simply broke. It doesn’t hurt to try your hand with a fresh install of Facebook. First you’ll need to clear the cache and data. You don’t want old data hanging around.

1. Open the Settings app. It’s the GEAR icon.

2. Keep scrolling until you locate ‘Apps.’ Select it.

3. Find the Messenger app and tap it.

4. First, select ‘Force Stop.’ Afterwards, head into ‘Storage.’

5. Select ‘Clear Cache’ and then tap ‘Clear Data.’ Once that’s completely, you can move to uninstall the Facebook app.

6. Locate the Messenger app on your Android device. Touch, and hold, your finger on the Facebook app. Your finger will pick up the app.

7. Drag the app to ‘Uninstall,’ located near the top. When Messenger has been completely uninstalled, you can move to reinstall it.

8. Open the ‘Google Play Store’ app.

9. In the search bar, search for ‘Facebook Messenger.’

10. Select ‘Install.’

Log Out of All Device

It’s possible that Facebook just isn’t sending notifications to every single session your Facebook account is logged into. Slim it down by logging out of all devices and start from scratch.

1. Open your Facebook Settings. It’s the small arrow located in the top right corner of the browser.

2. On the left hand panel, click on Security and Login.

3. You’ll see every single device that is currently logged into your account. Click See More.

Log Out Of All Session

4. Lastly, click ‘Log Out Of All Sessions.’

Enabling Notifications on Both Ends

The likely culprit is that notifications aren’t turned on at both ends. When Facebook is set to send you notifications, but your Android disabled notifications, Facebook won’t override your phone. The same goes for Messenger.

Enable Notifications on your Phone:

1. Launch the Settings app. It’s the GEAR icon.

2. Scroll until you find Apps. Select it.

3. Tap on the Facebook app among your currently installed apps.

4. Scroll down to Notifications. Select it.

Treat as priority

5. Turn Facebook notifications ON. Tap the slider to the right to turn it ON. It will turn blue. Even further, you can activate ‘Allow Peeking’ and ‘Treat as Priority.’

Enable Notifications on the Facebook App:

1. Launch the Facebook app.

2. Open your Settings. It’s the three horizontal lines located in the top right corner of the screen.

3. Scroll down to Settings & Privacy. Select the arrow to extend a drop down menu.

4. Locate and select Settings.

5. Navigate down until you find Notification Settings. Tap it.

enable push and sms notifications

6. You’ll see dozens of different options to alter. Double-check that the notifications you want to receive are actually set to notify you. The various outlets are SMS, Push, and Email. This means that, when they’re turned ON and you get a notification, the outlets that are accepted will notify you. For example, the image below has Push and SMS activated. A notification won’t show up in an Email.

How to Enable Auto Sync

1. Open the Settings app. It’s the GEAR icon.

2. Locate and select Accounts & Sync or Accounts. It varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

3. Select More. It’s the three vertical dots located in the top right corner of the screen.

4. From the drop down menu, select ‘Auto-sync Data.’

If you don’t want other apps to sync their data, disable ‘Auto-sync Data’ and simply choose Facebook and Messenger. Select More. Afterwards, tap ‘Sync Now.’

Alter your Data Restrictions

When you’re out and about, without your data turned on, Facebook won’t notify you of any updates to your newsfeed. How could it? If it doesn’t have a network connection, it can’t tell you when you’ve received new notifications.

Important: This will chip away at your mobile data. Skip this solution if you’re looking to conserve your data.

1. Open the Settings app. It’s the GEAR icon.

2. Locate and select Apps.

3. Locate and select the Facebook app.

4. First, select Force Stop.

5. Head into Data Usage.

6. Locate Background Data. Tap the slider to the right to turn it ON. It will turn blue. Alternatively, it can be listed as ‘Restrict App Background Data.’ Set it to Never.

7. Apply the same steps to Messenger.
