Facebook Add Friend Greyed Out?

It would seem a lot of folks have been experiencing issues with ‘Adding friends’ as luck would have it, the option is greyed out and not responding.

Now, this could be for a number of reasons, whether it is simply a problem on Facebook’s end or maybe that friend is being that honest with you.

You will find all of that here and the useful, insightful fixes that could make all the difference in how you approach the problem at hand.

Why is Add Friend Greyed Out on Facebook

1. Friend’s Profile Has Been Deactivated

See, when an account is deleted on Facebook, it is gone; there is absolutely no interaction you can engage with that account. However, if the account is deactivated, it gives your friend the opportunity to return.

Remember; though there has been a rise in the number of people deactivating their accounts in order to opt for another social media app that better suits what experience they are looking for.

Some have even claimed Snapchat to be this generation’s Facebook, as you should know; the younger generations simply want something of their own.

Now, this does not mean that Facebook is outdated or anything like that. Actually, to the contrary, facebook has been advancing right alongside new apps and their respective features.

Especially since Facebook has been slowly integrating into what Zuckerberg calls the “Metaverse”, in an attempt to keep up with the “pack” in technological advancements and impact not only the way you interact with the site & app but also how the site/app interacts with you.

Fix – Wait Till They Reactivate Their Account

As discussed in the last section, if your friend has deactivated their account, they can indeed return to that same account. If their account has been deleted, this is permanent and they will have to create a whole new account if they wish to return to the site/app.

So, if your friend has decided to deactivate their account and if you have other means of contacting said friend, reach out to them and ask if they can reactivate their account; so you can add them as a friend.

If you can possibly reach them on another social media site or app, then this is a viable way to let them know that you are wanting to add them to your friend’s list.

However, if you have no other way to contact them, you will have to wait until they reactivate their account.

2. They’ve Restricted Who Can Send Them A Friend Request

It is very possible that they have restricted who can send them a friend request. In this case, it can sting a bit. As usual, they will have to go to your profile and add you to the restricted list.

There is also a “Limited Profile List” that Facebook’s Privacy Settings rolled out in August 2011; that makes it to where you are unable to see any of their content as you are in membership with their “Limited Profile List”.

This case is also a bummer as it obviously means they don’t want you to see any of their content.

If you are by chance wanting to know how to restrict someone from adding you on Facebook, all you have to do is; select the “Friend Request” icon and, select “Settings”, choose an option from the “Who Can Send You Friend Request” list and then simply click “Done”.

After this, everyone who you have selected will be restricted from sending you friend requests which, sadly, sometimes can be entirely too necessary. We hope this fix helps with the “adding friends” situation.

3. When They Saw Your Friend Request, They Clicked Removed

There are unfortunate moments when your friend you are trying to add; saw your friend request and then decided to remove it. This can be an honest mistake to make, but it can also be not a mistake, which can be very unfortunate.

However, if it was a mistake, misunderstanding, or they simply did not mean to remove it. There are a number of possible reasons why they removed your friend request from the list.

Fix – Ask Them to Send You A Request

If the unfortunate situation has struck, such as them meaning to remove your friend request, accidentally removing it or misunderstanding the situation; one of the things you can do in order to rectify this issue is to ask them to send you the friend request.

Honestly, it is not entirely out of the realm of possibility that Facebook’s system made a mistake in the process of putting through your friend request. As technology is never perfect (not yet), it is susceptible to errors, bugs, and glitches.

It can even be something as small as a misreading in the algorithm. This is a possible side effect of the recent “upgrade” of Facebook with the “Metaverse”. You must remember, newer is not always better.

With change-ups in the software can bring on problems with the site’s or app’s processing system, which in turn can cause issues with perhaps your attempt at a friend request.

4. Is it Possible You’ve Got a Bug?

With social media sites, apps, and all sites and apps in general, when encountering a problem when trying an action such as sending a friend request. It is very possible you may have a”bug” and a bug being (an unexpected error that occurred in the software or even the hardware).

Some good ways to try to combat this is refreshing the page of the course or closing the app or site then open it again, hopefully restoring and reassessing the action you are trying to complete.

Now, there are many ways to try to fix this from happening, which will be discussed and listed below. For now, though, a bug in the software can cause an error, flaw or fault in an application (App), and this error causes an unintended or unexpected result, such as crashing or producing invalid results.

Fix – Use Facebook.com

When encountering this issue of trying to send a friend request on Facebook, it is very possible that there could be a bug or an issue in the app’s processor.

So, a great option in order to try to fix this issue is to change up the scenery by instead of using the app, hop onto your browser, laptop or desktop and search Facebook.com. This way, you are connecting up to their website, not their application (App).

Seeing as Facebook started as a website before it was an app, it really only makes sense that the website would most likely work better or at least more proficiently. Plus it could really give your eyes somewhat of a break from squinting at your phone’s screen.

Sure, you are trading a smaller screen for a larger one. However, the fix still remains, so give it a go, and it just might solve your problem with adding a friend. After all, we all need friends.

Fix 2 – Use Facebook on Your PC

As discussed in the last segment, it can be a useful tool to switch out your phone’s processing capabilities for your PC’s.

If you have not already tried, a good way to try and fix this problem with trying to add a friend is to hop on your PC (if you have one) and hop onto the browser and go to Facebook.com.

This will take you to the actual website and give you a somewhat better point of view and may restore your ability to add a friend.

This can be a better option because the app (being an app) has different ways of processing actions on the site, such as adding a friend.

Also, remember that your PC has more capabilities than your phone may, so if you have a PC to use, give this fix a go, and it just may be your answer.

Fix 3 – Log Out and Log In

Another viable option is to simply log out and log back in. This can help the site and or app reprocess and reassess your attempted actions, such as trying to add a friend. Sure, logging out and back in can be annoying, but it can help.

If you do not know how to log out and back in, follow along and we will get it. If you are on your iPhone, go ahead and open the application (App), and you will want to tap on the three stacked dots in the bottom right corner of the screen (these dots will be in the upper right corner for Android), then.

There on that menu will be the option to log out. Select the “log out” option, and this will log you out and on the page menu it takes you to after logging out; you can log back in from there.

If you are on your PC and don’t know how to log out, fear not, for this is how you can achieve it: Go to the Facebook website on the same browser you have previously logged in on. In the top right hand corner, select the downward-facing arrow.

This will drop a menu where you will the option to “log out”, go ahead and delete that option and this will officially log you out. The page menu it will take you to after logging out is the same page you can use to enter your appropriate information and log back in.

Hopefully, this will resolve your issue with trying to add a friend as it can certainly help the site (in a way) reconsider your account and the actions you wish to achieve and also reprocess your account and information.

Fix 4 – Clear the Cache

When dealing with these problems on applications (Apps) it is always a smart and viable option to clear your app’s cache. The cache is not that different as it can help processes and such flow efficiently within the application (App).

So, let’s get that cache cleared. Here is how you go about it. On your iPhone or Android, go to your phone’s settings, then go to “storage” and select it, then find “Other Apps” or “Apps” and select that option.

This will bring up a list of your applications (Apps). After that, you will want to select the app you are looking for, in this case, “Facebook”, then select the app, and this will open a menu to either “Close App” or “Clear Cache”. Select the “Clear Cache” option, which will do the trick and hopefully restore your ability to add that friend on Facebook.

Fix 5 – Update the App

Now, an important thing to remember is that every application (App) needs to be updated. This not only helps the software work properly but also sometimes it can offer new features to the application (App).

It is always a good idea to keep up on updates on your apps as they play a key role in keeping your device’s apps performing efficiently and without issue.

Also it does exactly what the name says. It keeps your apps up-to-date, which means any software upgrades or new features will become available when you update the app.

Now, you may wonder, “well, how do I update my apps?” and the answer is simple enough. When on your iPhone or Android: Go to your Google Play Store app and open it. Then at the top right corner should be your profile icon. Go ahead and select that.

This will trigger a pop-down menu to appear, and you will want to select the “Manage Apps & Device” option. This will bring up a list of your apps, then find the app in question, in this case it would be “Facebook” and then tap the “Update” option beside it.

This will update the app and, with any luck, also help you add that Facebook friend. Remember, updates are essential to keep your apps working properly and efficiently, so don’t hold back on getting them all updated. It is one of the best ways to keep your apps performing well.

Fix 6 – Reinstall Facebook

When having issues with applications (Apps); as stated in previous segments, it is good to keep up with updates, to clear your app’s caches’ and now it definitely helps to reinstall the application (App). This can help the app to reprocess your information and reset in a way.

Now, how do you go about reinstalling the app? Luckily this action is relatively simple, so this is how you do it.

You can achieve this by: on your iPhone or Android, find the app in question, in this case, it is “Facebook” then press and hold on the app icon until it goes into “Edit Mode”, then simply drag the app to the “uninstall” option at the top of the screen, hold it over the “uninstall” option and then simply let go and this will uninstall the application (App).

After that, you will want to proceed to your Google Play Store app and open it, then tap on your profile icon, and this will drop down to an options menu. You will want to select the “Manage Apps & Device” option, then swipe over to “Previously Installed Apps”, go ahead and find the app you uninstalled; being “Facebook”. Tap on the app then hit the “Install” option.

That is how you reinstall the application (App) and hopefully get some resolution with your adding friends on Facebook problem.

Fix 7 – Contact Facebook

Another good fix to this “adding friends on Facebook” dilemma is to get in touch with the professionals; the ones behind the great wall that is Facebook, the Facebook support center. You can easily find this option by: Log into your Facebook profile on your desktop. The menu will give you three options.

The first one being “Help Center.” Clicking this option will direct you to Facebook’s “Help Center” page, which is a searchable nexus of help articles. Here is where you will most likely find the “friend requests” frequently asked questions that should have an attached summary of how to fix these kinds of issues with Facebook.

If you would like to contact Facebook Help Center, what you need to do is: If you dial either of the Palo Alto-area phone numbers for the social media mega platform (those are 650-543-4800 and 650-308-7300, (for the record), you will get a recording. It will talk you through a series of menus, with each option directing you to send an email to an appropriate account.

Give these help/support lines a try, and you just may find some helpful answers that could clear the air about adding friends on Facebook.

5. The bummer of them all…Facebook is down

Facebook is a website and an application (App) as well, and all websites & apps need servers to store information and data. If there is a glitch in that server or if the server goes down for any reason, your site becomes unavailable as a result.

This is known as server downtime. However, because the problem lies with the server and not some programming error on your end, there is nothing you can do to get that server back up and running.

Therefore, all of these servers are bound and likely to eventually go down at some point. If you are unaware of how a server goes down, one could say, “this is how it goes down.”

A server can go down for many reasons. Maybe a physical machine loses power, or perhaps the operating system or network card experiences an issue. Many variables can cause failure.

Fix – Wait For Facebook Servers to Correct Itself

Knowing this information, servers are not only bound but also likely to go down. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can really do on your end; other than wait it out. There is also the possibility that the server went down for maintenance which usually consists of checking server log files, assessing hard disk

space, examining folder permissions, and monitoring network temperature applications. So, while they are working on getting the server back up, you can fill your time with other things, such as taking your dog for a walk or finally finishing that painting.

The key to this fix is patience; patience pays off. So, wait it out, and with some patience, you can get back on eventually and try adding that friend.

6. How’s Your Internet Connection

All too often, technical issues can be brought on by simple things like internet connection. Almost all of us are constantly connected to the internet, in one form or another, so it can be really easy to brush this concern aside.

However, you must consider it a possible issue when doing anything online as it definitely plays an important part in any action when surfing the web or simply adding a friend on Facebook, if not the most important part of it; it is essentially the life and blood of online activities. So, ask yourself, “Am I connected to the internet?” or rather, “Is my connection strong enough?”.

Fix – Fix Your Internet Connection

If your internet connection is causing trouble with your attempted Facebook activities, you will want to get that fixed immediately. Though this can occur in many different ways, if you are connected to the internet through WiFi, you must consider what caused the problem.

For example, it could be the router, and if you believe it to be the router, one thing you can do is reboot the router; luckily this is relatively easy, so we will put it into steps.

Step 1: Unplug the modem and router from the power outlet.

Step 2: Wait at least 15 seconds.

Step 3: Plug the modem back into the power outlet first, wait 1-2 minutes, then it is time to power on the router.

Step 4: Wait for all of the panel lights on your cable modem to become green before testing your internet connection.

This will reboot the router and could help your internet connection as it can resolve any possible errors, issues, and or glitches in the software. Also, this will help the router distribute the connection correctly to all of the devices connected to it.

With any luck and decisive troubleshooting, these fixes could hold the help you are looking for. Remember, Facebook is also in a period of constant changes, updates, and even “revamps” in a way, with features coming and going; so when these troubles occur, try to practice a little patience with the system.

Also, keep in mind that with the situation at hand, the “add friend” option essentially not being available, that the unfortunate reality just might be that; that person does not want you to be able to send them a friend request (add friend).

It could also be that they simply wanted to try another app for a while and have “deactivated” their account, which in that case, it is most likely that they will be back on eventually.

Remember, with these problems on social media and with technology and the accompanying faults that come with both subjects, being just, they are temporary problems waiting to be resolved and will be resolved.

That’s why it is good to have patience with all matters concerning technology, as it is ever-growing and ever-changing in the scope of technological advancements and ever-evolving cultural points of view.
