I’m going to show you what to do when the ‘Can’t Connect to App Store’ Error Message comes up. This happens when you try to go to the App Stores but you receive a message saying that you’re unable to connect. I’m going to show you why this message comes up and how you can fix it.
Why Does Your iPhone Say ‘Can’t Connect to App Store’?
When your iPhone or iPad brings up this message, there are a few reasons behind it and this can depend on the device you’re using. The most common reasons that this message would come up is because of a network problem that’s going on within your device.
Another reason why this message comes up is that there’s a problem with the App Store or there’s a problem with the software on your device. Down below are the best methods you can use to fix this problem.
Turn your WI-FI off then back on
As I mentioned before, a common reason why this message would come up is because of a network issue. Check to see if the WI-FI logo at the top of your device is showing up. If it is, you may not be connected to the internet properly, so tuning your WI-FI off then back on will allow your device to connect to the internet properly. To do this:
- Go to the Settings app
- Scroll down to WI-FI
- Toggle off the WI-FI then toggle it back on
While you’re here, you also want to check if your device is actually connected to your router or modem. If it is and you’ve followed the steps above, wait up to 30 seconds for your device to connect to your router and the internet.
Once this is done, go back to the App Store and see if the ‘Can’t Connect to App Store’ message is still there.
Reset your Router or Modem
If the step above didn’t work, there is probably an issue with your router and not your device itself. Even though you may have the WI-FI logo at the top and you’re connected to your router, this still doesn’t mean that you’re connected to the internet.
To try and connect to the internet, the best thing you can do is to reset your router. This is going to clear up any connectivity issues that’s going on within your router, which may allow it to connect to the internet. To reset your router:
- Go to your router and look at the back
- Look for a small hole with the word ‘Reset’ next to it
- Take the end of a paper clip or toothpick and push and hold the button for at least 10 seconds
This is going to reset your router and take it back to how it was when you first got it, don’t worry, you’re not going to mess it up. After you’ve done this, you’ll need to wait at least 5 minutes for your router to fully connect to the internet.
After you’ve done this, you’ll need to go to the Settings app and see if your device connected to your router. If it didn’t, there may be something wrong with the antenna in your iPhone that allows it to connect to WI-FI so you’ll need to get it repaired. If it did manage to connect, go to the App Store and see if you can connect to it. This hopefully should have worked.
Clear the App Stores Cache
After you’ve tried the network fixes above, the next thing you’ll want to do is to clear the App Stores cache. Since the problem is going in within the App Store, it makes logical sense to try and troubleshoot the problem from the App Store itself.
When you clear the App Stores cache, your iPhone or iPad gets rid of any files and data that has been stored from the App Store which is equivalent to deleting the App Store and reinstalling it. Of course, this can’t be done because it’s a bloatware app, so the next best way is to clear the cache files.
Not many people know how to clear the App Stores cache because it’s rarely talked about, but, I’m about to share that secret with you. To clear the App Stores cache files:
- Go to the App Store
- Look for the Apps button at the bottom
- Tap on it 10 consecutive times
Once you’ve done this, the App Stores cache files will be cleared. The next thing you need to do is to close the App then restart it again. After you’ve closed the app by swiping it off the background apps, you can check to see if the ‘Can’t connect to App Store message is gone.
Restart your iPhone
The next thing you can do to solve this issue is to simply restart your iPhone. This is a very common thing that iPhone users will do if there’s an issue with their device. This is because it’s so simple, but many don’t realise how effective restarting your iPhone actually is.
If there’s a software problem within your device, restarting it is going to clear up any minor issues and software glitches. If a minor software problem is causing your iPhone not to connect to the App Store, this method is going to fix it. To restart your iPhone or iPad:
- Hold the power button and wait for the red cross to come up
- Slide the cross to the right to turn your device off
- Once your device is off, hold the power button and wait for it to turn back on
- You can let go once you see the Apple logo
After your device has turned back on, you’ll need to wait a few minutes for it to connect to WI-FI. Once you see the WI-FI logo at the top, open the App Stores and check if the ‘Can’t Connect to App Store’ message has gone.
DFU Restore your iPhone or iPad
If you’ve tried all the steps above and you still can’t connect to the App Store, there may be a major software issue going on within the device that’s not allowing you to connect to the App Store. If a major software issue is causing this problem, the best thing to do is to backup and restore your phone from a DFU restore.
A DFU restore is the deepest type of restore that your iPhone can go through. A DFU restore is going to wipe all of the data and code from your device, update the operating system, then put all the data and code back on. This basically gives your iPhone or iPad a massive spring clean so any software issues that’s not allowing your phone to connect to the App Store is going to be fixed.
Before you do a DFU restore, the best thing to do is backup your device because it’s going to wipe all of the data from it. An iCloud backup is the easiest type of backup you can do and it’s going to allow you to get all of your data back from the iCloud.
