Apple gives your 5GB free iCloud backup storage for your Apple ID and this is the account you use to login to the App Store to buy apps and games. The free 5GB iCloud is used to back up your iOS devices content so when you need to switch to a new iOS device, you don’t have to start from scratch, you can immediately restore a backup which will bring all of the backed up content back onto your device.

iCloud storage stores your photos and videos, your apps, files, music, and other content. If you have a lot of data on your iOS device, you can quickly run out of the free 5GB storage plan. This is when you have to upgrade to a paid iCloud storage plan starting from 50GB storage.

Downgrade iCloud Plan

If you no longer want to pay monthly for the paid iCloud storage play, you can cancel your subscription. But if you cancel your iCloud subscription and your iCloud content exceeds your available iCloud storage, any new photos, videos, iMessages, apps won’t upload to your iCloud drive and your iOS device won’t backup. So, if you’re thinking of canceling your plan, you should be aware that you’re risking losing a lot of data.

If you do cancel your subscription and you delete a lot of content in your iCloud drive, your iOS device should have problems storing your content within 5GB and backing up your iOS device.
