Can You Send Whatsapp Number As Link

Users can find this process of saving your number and finding you on WhatsApp to be a hassle. So, you may want to share your WhatsApp number directly as a link so that once a user clicks on the link, they are immediately redirected to start a chat with you on WhatsApp without having to save the number first and find you on the app.

Can You Send WhatsApp Number As A Link?

Yes, you can send WhatsApp number as a link so that people who click on the link will immediately open a chat with you. Please note that this is quite different from inviting someone on WhatsApp which only sends them a link to install WhatsApp on their phone.

You would find the invite link here:

1. Open WhatsApp, then tap on the 3 vertical dots at the top right of the screen for More Options

2. Select Settings

3. Then select Invite or Invite A Friend

4. You would then be given the option to choose who to share the link to, and on what platform to do that

But users often confuse this for sharing their WhatsApp number as a link, which is entirely different. As we explained, all this does is to send the person a link to download WhatsApp to their phone. And if they already have WhatsApp, then the link is useless to them.

So, if you want to learn how to share your WhatsApp number as a link with users so that they can contact you directly by clicking the link, then you have come to the right place. We have provided step-by-step, easy-to-follow instructions on how to achieve that in this article.

How to Create WhatsApp Link for Your Number

The first step in sharing your WhatsApp number to users is to create a link for your WhatsApp number. This link is like a URL or website address. But when users click on the link, they are redirected to their WhatsApp app to chat with you instead of a website.

There are 3 main ways to create a link for your WhatsApp number, and we have detailed all of them below.

1. Manual Link

The first way to create a link to share your WhatsApp number so that users can contact you directly on WhatsApp when they click the link, is to type out the link manually.

To create this manual link, you have to use the format predefined by WhatsApp as follows:

1. First, enter https://

This will make sure that the link you are sharing is secure. And when the user opens the chat with you, you and the user are the only ones having access to the chat

2. Then, enter wa.me

wa.me is something called a tiny URL. A tiny URL is like a word abbreviation. But instead of abbreviating a word, you are abbreviating a URL or website address. “Wa” represents WhatsApp. “Me” represents My Number.

3. Then, enter /your phone number

When you use the manual method to enter your phone number, you should not add + to your country code. Instead, just type out the country code and the phone number together as a singular phone number. Also, do not include the area code brackets.

So, for example, if your country code is +1 and your phone number is (555)456789, just type 1555456789 as your number.

Now, to put all of the above together, this is the WhatsApp link for the phone number provided above: https://wa.me/1555456789

The format above is the only format that is permitted to be used to manually create a WhatsApp link for your phone number.

But that is not all. If you are a business and would like to know from where a customer clicked your WhatsApp link, or if you would like to simply their first contact with you, you could add a pre-set message in the WhatsApp link so that when they open the link, you already know where they got to you from, or what they may be looking for.

Let’s see an example. Suppose you want to add a message to the WhatsApp link so that when they reach out, you will see something like “Hi, I would like to register for the summer programme”, so that you understand that they clicked the link from your advertised summer programme on its landing page. It is easy to achieve this, let’s see how:

All you need to do is add the following to the link already created above

1. ? (Question mark)

Yes, a question mark is needed as a boundary or separator between the WhatsApp number link and the pre-set text that you are about to add

2. Text=

You need to add text = to specify that the next string of words is the pre-set text that you want to add to your WhatsApp number link. It is just telling WhatsApp to display the next string of words after text= as the opening message when a user opens your WhatsApp number link

3. %20

This is the separator for the text you are adding. That is, instead of putting a space between the words, you put %20. This is because, URL or web addresses do not understand spaces. So, for WhatsApp, the spacing is done using %20 instead.

For example, in the URL, instead of typing “how do I register” you type how%20do%20%i20register

Now, to put it all together using the phone number provided earlier, and “how do I register” as the pre-set text, you should type:

https://wa.me/1555456789?text= how%20do%20%i20register

So, when the user clicks on this link, they will be redirected to a new chat with you on WhatsApp, and will be provided with the “How do I register” text to send to you, to start the conversation.

2. Online Service

The second method to use in creating a link for your WhatsApp number so that users who click on it will immediately start a chat with you, is to use a trusted online service.

Some users find this to be more convenient because the link creation is done automatically by the web service without your having to manually type in the text in the right format, which users often find to be a hassle.

However, you need to be cautious about using an online service so that you don’t share your phone number with third parties like advertising companies.

In our example, we will be using Chat With to create a link with a WhatsApp phone number, with a pre-set text, too.

1. First, go to chatwith.io on a web browser using your phone or PC

2. On the page that opens, you will see a space to type in your phone number. A great thing about the website is that it automatically detects your country and enters the country code. So, all you need to do is enter the rest of the number after the country code.

3. However, if the country code is not correct, you can delete the pre-filled code and enter the correct one

4. Next, if you want to customize the link to reflect your business name so that when users see the link online, it bears your business name, then enter it in the tab labelled Enter A Name/Business Name To Customize Your Link

5. Finally, enter the pre-set text that you want to add to the link so that it’s the custom message that opens when they click the link. You should enter this text in the Add A Custom Message For Your Users tab.

If your company is named Testing Company, this is what the user will see as the URL

https://chatwith.io/s/testing-company

If they click on it using a PC, a new tab will be opened where your phone number will be displayed with a link that says Continue to Chat. Once they click on that, they will be prompted to open using WhatsApp web or WhatsApp desktop to chat with you

If they are using a mobile phone, they will be prompted to open the link using WhatsApp messenger on their phone.

3. Using QR Code

The final method to create a link for your WhatsApp number is to create a QR Code for your number.

This is the easiest and most convenient method for sending your WhatsApp number as a link to people. Users can either use their WhatsApp app camera to scan your WhatsApp number QR code and add you as a contact, or they can simply click on the link that comes with the QR code to add you, depending on how you share the QR code. More on that later.

For now, let’s take a look at how to create a QR code for your WhatsApp number so that people can easily add you as a contact using the code:

1. Launch WhatsApp and click on the More Options icon (3 vertical dots at the top right of the screen

2. Tap on Settings from the options

3. At the top, you will see a bar code next to your WhatsApp name. Tap on the bar code

4. On the next screen, you will see My Code and Scan Code

5. Make sure you are in the My Code section, then tap the Share icon at the top of the screen

6. At this point, you have created your WhatsApp number as a QR code and you can then decide how to share it, which we will explore in the next section.

The above 3 methods are the options you have for creating a link for your WhatsApp number.

How to Send WhatsApp Number As A Link

So, you have created a link for your WhatsApp number and you would like to know how to share it so that users can click on the link to contact you directly on WhatsApp.

It is very easy to do this because WhatsApp creates this link as though it were a web address. The only difference is that when users click on the web address, it prompts them to open WhatsApp on their phone to message you.

So, how you want to share the link is entirely up to you. Here are the common ways that you can send the WhatsApp number link that you have just created:

1. Website or Social Media Bio

You can simply paste the link on your website or social media bio as one of the methods to contact you. When users visit your contact page, then can click on the link and then open WhatsApp to contact you. This applies if you are using the manual link or a link generated by an online service.

If you are using the QR code method, you would need to paste the code as a picture that users can scan using their WhatsApp camera.

To do this:

6. Then, select to save it to your phone’s internal storage

7. When you choose this option, the QR code will be saved as an image, usually in PNG format. You can then upload it to your website for users to scan and start contacting you

When you paste your WhatsApp number as QR code on any platform, you can direct your users on how to scan the code and start messaging you on WhatsApp. Here is what they need to do:

1. Launch WhatsApp and click on the More Options icon (3 vertical dots at the top right of the screen

2. Tap on Settings from the options

3. At the top, they will see a bar code next to their WhatsApp name. Tap on the bar code

4. On the next screen, they will see My Code and Scan Code

5. They should tap on the Scan Code option

6. This will launch the WhatsApp camera. They should then place the camera over your QR code to capture it and add you as a contact.

2. Direct Message

Another method to send the link is to send it as a direct message to a specific user or group of users.

1. If you are using the manual method, all you need to do is type the link as a direct message and send to them. You do not need a special app nor do you need to be on WhatsApp to create a manual link.

So, if you are chatting on Instagram or Twitter, for example, just type out your manual link as a message in Instagram or Twitter and send as a direct message in the app.

2. If you used an online service to create the link, you can copy the link after it has been created, and then send it as a direct message on any messaging app of your choice.

3. If you are using QR code, you can share the code directly through direct message on your phone. When you get to the Share option for QR code, a list of all the messaging apps on your phone will be displayed. You can then select the option you want to share the code.

A user that receives the QR code via direct message can click on the link under the code to add you as a contact and start messaging you.
