The Science Behind Sunsets

There’s beauty in the sunset that many never fully realize or even care to understand. “It’s pretty,” one might say. And sure, it is. But when you view the sunset, you’re seeing a remarkable effect happening right before your eyes: scattering

You see, when light hits a particle or molecule, it changes the direction the light ray is moving, causing it to scatter. The colour itself is a result of the wavelength in which the light ray was moving as. When the sun is high in the sky, short-wavelength blue and violet are reaching your eyes, except violet is nearly canceled out due to your eyes not being equipped to see violet very well, hence, blue skies.

When it comes to the sunset, the sun is low on the horizon, entering the zone in which it can interact with more of the Earth’s atmosphere. This results in the blue and violet getting scattered away, leaving behind yellow, red and orange for your eyes to pick up on.
