In this article, I’m going to show you how to check your iPhones battery health with the new ‘Battery Health’ feature in the Settings app.
This feature allows you to check the condition of your battery and see how healthy it is. I will also show you how to disable performance management to stop your iPhone from shutting down unexpectedly.
What Does the Battery Health Feature do?
As you may have heard last year, Apple was criticized for slowing down older iPhones. Here’s what the BBC said, “Apple says it will issue a software update to give users more information about battery health.
It said it had made changes to the iOS operating system to manage ageing lithium-ion batteries in some devices because the batteries’ performance diminishes over time”.
Apple has been working on a new feature called ‘Battery Health’ and it was introduced in the iOS 11.3 update.
It basically lets you check the condition of your battery, so you know when you need to replace it.
If you have an old iPhone and you’ve been using it for a while now, you can expect your batteries maximum capacity to be low.
If you have a new iPhone such as the iPhone X, you can expect your batteries maximum capacity to be fine.
The more charge cycles your iPhone has been through, the worse your batteries health is going to be. The battery health feature also allows you to disable ‘Performance Management’.
What is Performance Management in the Battery Health Feature?
If you have an old iPhone, you may have experienced your iPhone shutting down unexpectedly and you may have guessed, this is because of your battery health.
Here’s what the Guardian said, “The company explained that when a battery is in a poor condition it may not be able to supply the required maximum current demanded by the phone’s processor at full speed. If that happens, the iPhone can shut down unexpectedly to protect the internal components”.
The performance management feature gives your iPhone permission to shut down unexpectedly.
The performance management feature shuts your iPhone down by looking at the state of your battery, device temperature, and battery impedance.
This feature was released in the 10.2.1 iOS update and you didn’t have the option to turn it off. If you have the iOS 11.3 update, you can disable Performance Management feature in the Settings app.
Install the iOS 11.3 Update
If you want to access the Battery Health feature and disable Performance Management, you’ll need to install the iOS 11.3 update.
If you check your battery settings now, you will not see this feature because your iPhone may not because updated.
If you have an iPhone lower than the iPhone 5S, you will not be able to use this feature. To update your iPhone to iOS 11.3:
- Go to the Settings App
- Scroll down to General
- Click ‘Software Update’
- Your iPhone will check for updates, then click on ‘Install now’
Once you click this, your iPhone will turn off and it will install the update. This will take a while so be patient and wait for your iPhone to reboot.
Once this update is installed, the performance management feature that was enabled will be disabled.
When the update is first installed, you won’t need to disable performance management because it will be turned off automatically.
How to Check Battery Health
Once you’ve installed the iOS 11.3 update, you can access Battery Health feature and you can check the performance of your battery.
This will also tell you if your iPhone is running at peak performance or not. Here’s how to assess your battery performance:
- Go to the Settings app
- Scroll down to Battery and click on it
- Tap on ‘Battery Health’
From here, you can assess your battery and see whether it needs replacing. The peak performance is going to tell you whether your battery is causing your iPhone to slow down and shut down unexpectedly.
The Maximum capacity settings will let you check how your battery is performing overall. This will also give you an idea of how long your iPhone will last when you charge it.
How do I Know if my Battery is Good?
If your iPhone is fairly new and you’ve had less than 50 charge cycles, your iPhone should be in good health.
If you’re not sure, under Peak Performance Capability, it’ll say, ‘Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance”.
Your battery may still be a bit degraded even if it says your battery is at peak performance, but your device is not going to shutdown unexpectedly until your battery is in a bad condition and it can’t supply enough power to keep the phone running.
How do I Know if my Battery is Bad?
If your battery is degraded and in a bad condition, under the peak performance, it will say “Your battery’s health is significantly degraded. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity”.
This is basically telling that your battery is bad, and you need to replace it as soon as possible so your device can run smoothly.
Scroll down to see the quickest and cheapest way you can change your battery.
If your battery is bad and you’ve been experiencing random shutdowns, performance management is enabled, and you’ll need to disable it. In the same settings, under ‘Peak Performance Capability’, you will see a blue button called ‘Disable’.
If you click this, you’ll receive a pop up saying, ‘Disabling May Lead to Unexpected Shutdown’, click ‘Disable’. Once you’ve disabled it, you won’t be able to turn it back on again.
If you’ve turned off performance management, your device may still shut down unexpectedly in the future.
If your iPhone hasn’t experienced at least one shutdown, you won’t be able to disable performance management.
Replace your iPhones Battery
If your batteries performance is low and you keep experiencing random shutdowns, you’ll need to get your battery replaced so that you can start using your iPhone normally again.
Apple Repair Service
If you have a device older than the iPhone 6, Apple says that you can get your iPhone’s battery replaced for $29 until the end of 2018.
Even if your battery is running normally and you haven’t experienced your iPhone shutting down unexpectedly, you can still get your battery replaced for the same price.
If anything else is damaged on your iPhone, the battery isn’t the only that will be replaced and the $29 battery replacement may end up costing a lot more.
You can go to the Apple store nearest to you and set up an appointment to replace your battery. This can take a few weeks.
Puls Repair Service
If your device is below the iPhone 6, the replacement with Apple will cost $79. A cheaper and quicker alternative will be Puls.
They can send a qualified and certified technician to meet you at your home, Starbucks, a park, or anywhere you choose.
You only pay once you’re satisfied with the replacement. You can get your iPhone’s battery replaced tomorrow if you really wanted to. You can schedule an appointment and you can cancel it if you don’t want the replacement anymore.
Hopefully, after following all of these steps, you should know more about your battery and your battery should be in a better condition if you replaced it.
