I’m going to start with the most reliable solutions first so that you don’t have to keep scrolling down and trying useless solutions.

Why Does the api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll Error pop up?

When you open a program and this error pops up, it means that the program can’t start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer.

This can also mean that the universal CRT that’s part of the Visual C++ Redistributable has failed to install properly. This can be fixed by updating Universal CRT.

Update Universal C Runtime

This is the first and most reliable thing you can do to stop this message from popping up.

The Universal CRT is a Microsoft Windows operating system component.

This means that if this isn’t properly updated, you could have problems within the Windows operating system.

To update Universal C Runtime:

  1. Download the Universal CRT from Microsoft
  2. Install the update package
  3. Restart your PC to implement changes
  4. Programs should start to run with no error

After downloading this update package, you can now open programs without seeing the error anymore.

If this worked, it means that the Universal CRT failed to install properly which was causing the error to appear.

Update the Software with Windows Update

Since the api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll file is included in the software, you can try and fix this problem by re-installing the software.

This can be done via Windows Update.

To update the software:

  1. Search for Check for update in the search bar
  2. Click on Check for Update
  3. Windows will check for a new update and install one automatically
  4. If not, click on the install updates button
  5. Restart your PC to implement changes
  6. The error should no longer pop up

To repair this:

  1. Go to the Control Panel
  2. Click on Programs
  3. Go to Programs and features
  4. Click on Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable

  3. The error should no longer pop up

If you’ve tried all the steps above and you’re still seeing this error, you’ll need to go to the next step.

Download the Missing DLL file

If this file is missing from your pc, you’ll need to copy the DLL file from another PC.

To do this, you’ll first need to check if both PCs are running on the same system.

  1. Type system information and open it

Windows system type

  1. Check the system type and OS name and make sure it’s the same as the other PC
  2. On the other computer, press the Windows logo + E
  3. Go to C:\Windows\System32
  4. Type in api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll and enter

  1. Copy this and paste it in the same location as your file

After this, you should no longer see this error message pop up when you try and open a programme.
